Soviet Communism

In this course, emphasis is placed on the theories of Karl Marx and Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and their implications for classless societies in the 20th century. Soviet Communism examines why communism succeeded in Russia, how it was practiced globally, and why it ultimately failed. Among texts discussed are The Communist Manifesto, Engles and Marx; Darkness at Noon, Koestler; Communism: A History, Pipes, and The Whisperers, Figes.

Prerequisite: Open to students in fifth and sixth form with departmental approval.
