The course will start with a brief introduction into public health, public health theory and behavioral change models. The course will then explore the seven theories of community development and asset based community development. We will explore the connection between community and economic development, as well as community development as a means to promote social capital. We will explore current best practice utilizing existing resources such as Kansas Universities Community Tool Box and new evidence based programming such as school based health centers. On top of learning about the community development of both a rural and urban community, students will use theory and best practice to bring a new community initiative to Kent.
