In the fall of 1973, Tiz was among the first group of girls to row at Kent and was among the first female rowers to represent Kent at the Head of the Charles. In addition to rowing, she excelled in basketball and softball. As a student, she challenged the administration to improve the competitiveness of the girls’ programs. Tiz was inducted into Kent’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.

Tiz returned to Kent in 1980, coaching field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. In an effort to broaden athletic opportunities, she helped found the Western New England Preparatory School Girls Basketball Association. She was a fierce advocate for the girls’ programs to improve most of all opportunities, but also equipment, uniforms, facilities, and services.

After leaving Kent in 1990, Tiz later joined Westover School, where she added to the athletic offerings by starting competitive programs in cross country (which won a New England Championship), swimming, and golf, and establishing a rowing program. She also coached field hockey and squash programs to great success, and oversaw the growth in competitiveness of the basketball program.

In addition to her responsibilities as Director of Athletics, Tiz served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, and President of District IV. While president, she encouraged other women to become involved in the leadership process and created a mentorship program for new Athletic Directors. Tiz was a valued board member for 14 years and her balanced, calm leadership style was always appreciated.
