"Personal Geographies," an exhibition including 32 photographs by Trent Davis Bailey '04 is now on view at the Denver Art Museum through February 11, 2024. The collection explores Bailey's profound connection to personal history, the interplay between images and memory, and the captivating landscapes of western Colorado.
Bailey's artistic journey is prominently showcased, drawing from his latest book, "The North Fork," published by Trespasser Books, Austin, Texas, in 2023. The body of work is a visual narrative that intricately weaves together childhood memories, the charm of small-scale family farms, and the rugged beauty of the Colorado landscape.
Reflecting on his time at Kent School, Bailey expressed gratitude for the influence of the art department and his photography teacher, Curtis Scofield. Fondly recalling his experiences, Bailey notes, "I think back fondly of the freedoms I had in all of my art classes at Kent, particularly Curtis Scofield's black-and-white darkroom photography courses. 'Scofs,' as I liked to call him, supported my enthusiasm for photography."
Bailey continues, "Working in his darkroom, I became enthralled by the alchemical magic of photography and the seemingly infinite ways a camera can allow one to see the world anew. He also instilled in me a love of photographic printmaking, especially the pleasure that can be found in making a silver gelatin print. So many of the things I learned in art classes at Kent, such as the tenets of analog photography, color theory, and the balance between form and content, are still integral to my art today."
