Kent School is celebrating a significant milestone as its Center for Music Studies marks its 10th anniversary. What began as a renovated space above the dining hall has transformed into a vibrant hub of musical creativity.
The renovation project, which included an overhaul of Mattison Auditorium, has developed into a comprehensive musical education facility. 15 music instructors teach private lessons in instruments ranging from classical piano to traditional bagpipes. The Center includes multiple classrooms, practice rooms, and a recording studio.
"The Music Center was always about more than just creating a new space," says Director of Music Studies Barbara Kovacs. "We wanted to give students a real home for their musical passion — a place where they could truly explore and grow."
Student musicians use dedicated spaces for orchestra, concert band, and concert choir rehearsals. These groups regularly perform throughout the year. "Everyone enjoys our concerts, recitals, and Chapel performances, especially the annual Lessons and Carols service — these events require a great deal of time and practice, and our musicians are fortunate to have this special space in which to create our magic," Kovacs said.
"These performances showcase the center's real purpose," Kovacs says. "They bring our entire community together, creating moments that define the Kent experience."
As Kent School marks this decade of musical achievement, the Center for Music Studies represents the school's commitment to arts education.
