At its core, the Kent School Equestrian Team is a community supported by dedicated staff members who find joy and purpose in their roles. Their approach aligns with the school's commitment to character development, shaping independent, compassionate, and capable young adults.
This philosophy extends beyond riding, emphasizing life skills. Riders not only hone their equestrian skills but also take on responsibilities that instill discipline, time management, and self-reliance.
Head Trainer Lyman Whitehead captures the essence, saying, "Our riders work together, supporting and encouraging each other, caring for their horses, and learning valuable life skills. It's not just about riding; it's about embracing the school's motto in every aspect."
"We instill values like hard work in our riders, both in and out of the saddle," adds Barn Manager Lauren Meehan. "Putting the horse first teaches responsibility, compassion, and respect."
Behind the scenes, the program thrives on the dedication of the entire equestrian staff and their unwavering commitment to ensuring the program runs smoothly, creating an environment where riders, horses, and the community flourish. These individuals embody hard work and dedication, contributing significantly to Kent School's mission, and their impact transcends the visible, establishing an environment where both riders and horses thrive.
Groom Courtney Hussey recalls her first day at the stables: "Everyone was so welcoming, and I instantly felt like part of a team. I also love being around horses, so that was an automatic win for me. I've enjoyed watching the students and how they grow from year to year."
Equestrian Coordinator Kara Ferreira underscores the importance of riding in students' lives, saying, "Students who ride at Kent come for the complete experience, and riding is often a huge part of their lives. I enjoy working with the program staff and school officials to make that experience possible."
"There are so many memorable moments with the students and their horses," adds Meehan. "It's the culmination of all of them that encapsulates why I love what I do." She finds joy in watching students progress, stating, "Watching students progress and reach their goals, seeing the enjoyment and therapeutic benefits they get from having their horse at school reinforces my commitment."
Whitehead tailors programs to help riders achieve their goals, contributing to his daily fulfillment. He emphasizes, "I very much appreciate and enjoy the camaraderie of the team aspect of the Kent School Equestrian Team."
