Head trainer of the Kent School Equestrian Team Lyman Whitehead has been nominated to judge the prestigious ASPCA Maclay Finals. This honor recognizes Whitehead's extensive experience and success as a rider, trainer, and judge in the equestrian world.
Whitehead, a USEF "R" judge, has been an active competitor for more than 38 years. He has trained horses and clients for the AA Circuit, producing top hunters who have earned championships at major horse shows such as the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Washington International Horse Show, the National Horse Show, and the Devon Horse Show and County Fair. Whitehead himself is a five-time leading hunter rider of the Hampton Classic, leading hunter rider of the National Horse Show, and three-time leading rider of the Old Salem Farm Horse Show.
Under Whitehead's guidance, the Kent School Equestrian Team offers students a unique opportunity to pursue their equestrian goals in the hunter, jumper, and equitation disciplines while receiving top-notch academic instruction. The program focuses on developing well-rounded horsemen and horsewomen through professional training and a strong emphasis on classical horsemanship fundamentals.
The ASPCA Maclay Finals, first established in 1933, is one of the most prestigious competitions for junior riders in the United States. Its winners include some of the biggest names in equestrian sport, such as Peter Wylde, William Steinkraus, Frank Chapot, and Jessica Springsteen. The finals, held at the National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, consist of a challenging two-day competition that tests riders' skills over fences and on the flat.
