Boys Basketball
Kent Basketball continues to reinforce its position as one of the premier prep programs in New England and among the best blends of on-court excellence and academic preparation in the country.
Our focus is to attract, challenge, and support young men who want to compete at a high level and commit themselves to the team concept.
Skill Development & Teamwork
The Kent Boys Basketball program is designed to prepare young men to succeed both on and off the court. Special attention is paid to developing individual skills, analyzing film, and, most importantly, understanding the role that each player contributes to the team’s success. At Kent, the effectiveness of the team stems from the commitment of each of its players to value team accomplishments over personal successes.
Leadership & Character Development
Each player on the team is instilled with the confidence to take on a leadership role, regardless of their talent level or experience. Kent Boys Basketball operates like a college program with an emphasis on preparing each player physically and mentally for success at the next level. The list of Kent Basketball alumni who have gone on to play at top-flight college programs, from high-major Division I to high-academic Division III, is long and decorated.
Coach Tim McCarthy
Tim McCarthy was appointed as the Head Coach of Boys Varsity Basketball after serving as an assistant coach for two years. Tim graduated from Amherst College in 2022 where he was voted a senior captain of the Men's Basketball team. Tim was also named to the NESCAC All-Academic team three times and the All-Sportsmanship Team his senior year. At Amherst, Tim contributed to the program’s NESCAC Championship in 2018 and Sweet Sixteen run in the NCAA Tournament.
Coach McCarthy brings a depth of basketball knowledge and passion to the Kent Basketball program. His coaching philosophy centers around the core concepts of competitiveness, selflessness, and accountability. In his words, “Kent Basketball players are pushed—both on and off the court—to be relentlessly competitive, unfailingly selfless, and accountable to both themselves and the team.” Coach McCarthy values the development of the entire student athlete by striving to not only prepare his players for the next level of basketball, but also help them develop into the best versions of themselves.
In addition to coaching Boys Varsity Basketball, Coach McCarthy is a member of the English Department, coaches Varsity Football, and lives in North Dorm.
