Girls Rowing
For the last 50 years, Girls Rowing at Kent has developed a program that challenges students to be sharp physically and mentally, and to push themselves as individuals and as part of a crew.
Overview

Skill Development & Teamwork
Girls Rowing at Kent emphasizes the fundamentals, dedication, and rowing’s distinct blend of individual performance and reliance on teammates. Rowing is a sport that gives back what an individual invests. No one succeeds in rowing without committing to training and having fun with the sweat equity required.

Leadership & Character Development
In many parts of the world, rowing is considered an elitist sport. At Kent, we aim to make rowing a community sport accessible to everyone. We hope to be a leader in breaking down the entry barriers to broader participation in the sport.
Meet the Coaches
Coach Melissa Holcombe ’87
Melissa Holcombe ’87 serves as Interim Head Coach of Kent School Girls Rowing. A Kent alumna and former standout rower, Coach Holcombe was a member of three undefeated Kent crews that captured New England Championships and earned multiple national titles during her student-athlete career. She went on to row at Princeton University, where she competed in the varsity eight and helped lead the Tigers to a National Collegiate Rowing Championship in 1990.
Since joining Kent's faculty in 2008, Coach Holcombe has been a valued member of the School community and an integral part of the rowing program. She has served as an assistant coach since 2021, helping to develop student-athletes both on and off the water. Most notably, she helped guide Kent's Second Boat to a New England Championship in 2023.
Coach Holcombe brings extensive rowing experience, a deep understanding of Kent's rowing tradition, and a strong commitment to the growth and development of student-athletes. Her lifelong connection to the program, combined with her years as an educator and coach, make her exceptionally well-positioned to lead Kent Girls Rowing.
Outside of rowing, Coach Holcombe teaches mathematics and computer science. She and her husband, Peter, have three sons, all of whom graduated from Kent.
Kent School is currently conducting a nationwide search for its next Head Coach of Girls Rowing. Prospective student-athletes and their families are encouraged to contact Athletic Director Jason Coulombe with any questions about the program.

There are many ways to make boats move. What helps them go really fast is a rare combination of concentration, boat sense, training, technical preparation, and trust.
