Meet the Coach
Coach John Hinman
Coach John Hinman began coaching mountain biking at Kent in the mid ‘90s. As a rider, he began in the 80s, in Aspen, CO. In addition to racing mountain bikes, Coach Hinman has competed in USCF road races, criteriums, and cyclocross races.
In 1992, after earning his M.A. at the University of Virginia, he moved to Kent to teach and coach. That same year, Mr. Curtis Scofield of the Art Department launched a mountain biking program, which Coach Hinman joined at the first opportunity.
“What I’ve absorbed in decades of riding, building, fixing, and tuning bikes is joyful to me only if I can pass on,” Coach Hinman explained. “I enjoy riding with the more advanced kids, but Coach Abrams is our role model for the ridiculously fast. My superpower is patience. At every level, I try to keep it simple and emphasize the basic element of riding that will be most useful at a given point. All of the coaches are feeding the virtual loop of learning skills, achieving fitness and results, and gaining confidence. It’s a very tangible way for students to recognize that there are paths to meeting challenges.”
Coach Hinman is a member of the English Department, which he chaired 2008-18.
