The decision to suspend or terminate an ongoing athletic event due to weather is made by the Athletic Trainers. Game officials, acting within the scope of their governing bodies, also have the authority to suspend or cancel athletic contests. In the absence of a trainer, this decision resides with the Athletics Director or a designee (e.g. head coach, Dean, or Operations and Facilities Supervisor).
Criteria for Evacuation
One or more of the following sources will be utilized to gather pertinent local weather related data:
- MxVision WeatherSentry Warning System
- National Weather Service and/or National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) local weather radar (www.noaa.gov, www.weatherunderground.com, or www.weather.com)
If thunder is heard, begin preparation for evacuation. When an appropriate warning is received from MxVision or another source and lightning is within an 8-mile radius or is sighted, coaches will be notified by radio on channel 1 or in person to clear all fields and seek shelter in the nearest indoor facility.
When an appropriate warning is received from MxVision or another source and lightning is within a 15-mile radius, is sighted, or thunder is heard, coaches will be notified by radio on channel 5 or in person to clear the river. If too far to safely return to dock, the boat(s) will be brought to the nearest safe-access to shore and evacuated at least 100 yards from the river bank where transportation back to campus will be arranged.
Criteria for Resumption of Play
Clearance to resume play will be given by the Athletic Trainers, Athletics Director, or a designee when notification has been received by MxVision or another reliable source that no lightning has occurred within an 8-mile radius or 30 minutes after the last sight of lightning.
