Kent School Dance Ensemble
There is something for everyone in the Kent dance program, and we welcome students with any experience and special interest. When a student signs up for dance, he or she is automatically part of the ensemble (KSDE). Ensemble members take four technique classes a week in ballet, jazz / jazz-funk, and modern. Students take a placement class at the start of each term to determine whether they should take the beginner class or the intermediate / advanced class. The ensemble performs pieces choreographed by their technique class instructor for the end-of-term show; performing is mandatory for all ensemble members. The ensemble has opportunities to take master classes with guest dance artists from New York City and the surrounding area (past classes include African dance, modern, ballet, musical theater, and tumbling / partnering techniques), as well as attending performances off-campus.
Kent School Dance Company
Students who are placed in the intermediate / advanced classes are invited to be part of the dance company (KSDC). Company members may choreograph pieces for the end-of-term show, and select students from within the company to be their dancers. Students in KSDC must be able to learn choreography quickly and thoroughly, as well as being reliable and respectful members of the ensemble. The company will rehearse on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.
The primary goal of the program is for students to discover their creative movement ideas through the practice of improvisation and choreographic studies as they work collaboratively to put together an end-of-term performance.
Eleanor Morris; director (modern, beginner ballet)
Heather Holohan-Guarnieri (jazz, jazz-funk: beginner, intermediate / advanced)
