Residential Life

One of the great rewards of boarding school is living where you learn. At Kent you are surrounded by classmates and friends, teachers and mentors, coaches and advisors. In your dorm at Kent, you will learn from the challenges and rewards of living with people. You will be exposed to a diverse student body from different cultures, traditions, and backgrounds. Learning how to define and share space, respect and cooperate with others, and care for your community is a valuable part of life at Kent School.

Roommates & Dorms

All Kent students are initially matched with a roommate; students may change roommates after their first term. Kent School has four boys' dorms and three girls' dorms; each dorm has a common room area with couches, TV, VCR, and microwave; some common rooms have table tennis and pool tables as well.

Safety & Guidance

A total of 28 faculty are part of the residential system at Kent, living on every dorm hallway. Every dorm room is secured by a lock, and the dorms themselves are closed each evening at 11 PM. Safety Officers are on duty from 4 PM -- 7 AM every day. In addition to the supervision provided by the Dorm Head and resident faculty, Prefects help to manage the basic aspects of Dorm Life.

Drug & Alcohol Policy

In 1985 Kent was the first New England boarding school to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to drugs and alcohol. The reasoning for the School's policy, as articulated by Richard Hawley in School Answers Back is that (1) students who want to adhere to a standard of good conduct, and seek to live and study in a drug-free environment, need to be supported by clear and consistent school policies, and (2) young people who use drugs and alcohol need support and professional help that a school cannot provide. It is our belief that in order to provide a safe environment for academic study and personal growth, use of drugs and alcohol must be prohibited. Kent's zero-tolerance policy is part of a comprehensive program of preventative education, discipline, and rehabilitation options.
