Kent Hockey Players Get Some Extra PracticeBy Ara Josefsson ’12, Staff Writer |
Kent School ice hockey players have been given a unique opportunity this year: to begin practicing their on ice skills long before the actual hockey season starts. A large piece of synthetic ice has been set up, complete with netting, a goal, and a bench, directly behind the hockey rink. Kent School varsity boys hockey captain Ryan Rosenthal ’12 comments, “Having the synthetic ice is incredibly useful for improving stick skills and shooting in preparation for the season.” Not only are the players excited about this opportunity for improvement, but so is assistant boys varsity hockey coach Mr. Smith, who pointed out that, “Skating on synthetic ice is much harder than skating on actual ice, requiring much more muscle just to push off on each stride. Also, while players hone their shooting skills, goalies can see some extra shots that generally they would have to wait at least another month for.” Overall, this additional practice is sure to give Kent players an edge over other teams in the league when hockey season actually does start.
