A new sculpture above the circulation desk in the library is causing a stir on campus.
Faculty and staff members from the art and math departments and the library and maintenance departments, along with over 70 students, have been involved in this collaborative work.
The project links concepts and people from many fields and times, including English programming pioneer Ada Lovelace, German poet Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, Hungarian Pianist Franz Liszt, and American contemporary artist Tara Donovan.
The group took a Schiller poem, put it into binary code, and, through a generous donation of bottle caps from the Nestle Corporation, brought the code into art by sculpting caps into the zeroes and ones of the code.
A total of 2608 Poland Spring water bottle caps were used to create the sculpture.
Come see the new permanent installation.
