REACH Extreme Couponing
By Rebecca Bertuch '13, Staff Writer
With the dedicated help of students and faculty, REACH has been extreme couponing in order to save money on supplies needed for the Kent Food Bank including food, cleaning supplies, and toiletries. Extreme couponing is an amazing way to bring awareness to the possibilities of economization as well as, as the old saying goes, seeing just how far a dollar can stretch. REACH has spent only $154.29 since the beginning of the school year, but has been able to buy tons of items!
Cereal has been one of the most common items purchased with coupons, with eight boxes of Rice Krispies Cereal, nine boxes of Corn Pops Cereal, two boxes of Raisin Bran Cereal (at 59 cents each!), seven boxes of Chex Cereal, and two boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios Cereal picked up for less.
Of course, other food besides cereal was purchased, too, including two boxes of Ritz crackers, eight jars of Ragu pasta sauce, two jars of Francesco Rinaldi pasta sauce (at 30 cents each), three cans of Pringles chips, ten boxes of Betty Crocker Brownie mix, twelve cans of Progresso Soup, six jars of Smuckers jam, two bags of Dunkin Donuts coffee, and two bottles of Kraft salad dressing.
The group also purchased seven bottles of Dawn dish detergent, eight tubes of Crest toothpaste (at 88 cents each), fourteen boxes of feminine items, two bottles of Arm and Hammer laundry detergent, and two bottles of Purex laundry detergent. On behalf of the club, Director of Community Service, Mrs. Sokolonicki, is thrilled to say, “Thank you to everyone who has been sending coupons our way!” She is eager to keep the program up and running, so members of the community can leave coupons in her mailbox. The couponing has truly been a success, and REACH is excited to continue it in the future to help the Food Bank in whatever ways possible.
