Dr. Corey Appointed to Carey Teaching Chair in Science

At a recent faculty meeting, Dr. Kenneth A. Corey was appointed to the William G. Carey ’52 Teaching Chair in Science.

Dr. Corey joined the Kent faculty in 2002 having taught science at the elementary, high school and university levels in Massachusetts.

He earned his B.S. in Plant and Soil Sciences from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a M.S. in Plant Physiology, with a minor in Soil Science & Statistics from North Carolina State University at Raleigh. He received a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology, with a minor in Statistics, also from  North Carolina State University.

A scholar and numerous award winner and grant recipient with a proven research and publishing record, Dr. Corey has contributed to, or been the principal author of more than a dozen papers, presentations and reports for scholarly journals and colloquia, including The Journal of Astrobiology, Eco-Engineering and the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, including a 2006 article in The Journal of Astrobiology entitled, “Short-term exposure of
Arabidopsis thaliana to hypobaric environments:  Implications for Low-Pressure Bioregenerative Life Support Systems for Human Exploration Missions and Terraforming on Mars.”

Dr. Corey teaches courses in Advanced Placement Chemistry, Astronomy, Meteorology and Geology, Honors Chemistry, Chemistry 1, Genetics and Biotechnology. 

An outdoorsman, hiker, gardener, conceptual artist and painter, he has also coached girls’ varsity softball and junior varsity squash, in addition to serving as the assistant coach of boys’ junior varsity baseball.
