At 24 years old, Stephanie Nyombayire '04 has accomplished as much as many might hope for in a lifetime. She is from Rwanda and lost dozens of members of her family during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. This galvanized her determination to fight back. Nyombayire vowed to advocate against genocide and encourage others to take action. While she was active in international issues involving genocide during her time at KENT, it was after graduation that her involvement in the cause grew into leadership. Nyombayire went on to co-found the Genocide Intervention Network, an organization with the mission to “empower individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide.” She reported on the crisis in Darfur directly from refugee camps on the Chad-Sudan border. For her work in Darfur, she was named one of Glamour magazine’s Top Ten College Women. Most recently, she has worked with Generation Rwanda, an organization that helps "orphans and socially vulnerable young people in Rwanda pursue a university education," and is currently featured a new documentary, "The Rescuers."
