Walking For a Cure

Walking for a CureThis fall members of the Kent community traveled to Litchfield, Connecticut to participate in the 2009 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Kent participated in this event to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about the disease, and to help save lives. This walk, among many others, is part of the American Cancer Society’s premier effort to raise awareness and revenue to fight breast cancer. Since 1993, nearly five million walkers have raised over $340 million through Making Strides. Case Dorm’s Breast Cancer Fundraiser is one of the leading charitable efforts on Kent’s campus.  Each year, two 5th formers and residents of Case Dorm are appointed chairs of the Breast Cancer Fundraiser. The goal of Kent’s Breast Cancer Fundraiser is to earn donations through multiple projects and events throughout the year. All the proceeds are donated to various breast cancer research foundations, including The American Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This walk was the first of numerous charitable projects that The Breast Cancer Fundraiser will host this year.

Members of the Kent family joined the Kent School Team online at the American Cancer Society About and 29 families, friends and faculty donated money towards the great cause. Although the day brought severely damp and bitter weather, fifteen students, three faculty members, and one dog braved the harsh climate and participated in the 3.1 mile walk. One of the Breast Cancer Fundraiser coordinators commented, “The Breast Cancer Walk was a big success. After raising over $2,000 for the American Cancer Society, members of the Kent community joined hundreds of others in the walk against breast cancer in Litchfield, Connecticut. Despite the unusual cold and wet fall weather, we were still able to have a wonderful time, while fighting for a great cause.”  The walk not only raised money for the fight against breast cancer, but also brought members of the Kent community closer together.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is one of the many charitable events that the Breast Cancer Fundraiser will host this year; others include the second annual Pink Out Game, an online auction and raffle, dress down day t-shirts, and a gingerbread house competition.  A special thanks to all of the students, faculty, and family members of the Kent community who donated their time and money towards this important cause. With the aid and dedication of the school’s efforts The Breast Cancer Walk was a huge success.
