As the much dreaded week of final exams approached, students were glad to know that there was something to look forward to- KENT’s second annual Relay for Life- which took place on May 29th.
For those in attendance, it is not hard to recall that Saturday night in May when most of the school and Kent community were on the football field, having a good time while raising money to fight cancer. There was fun with friends, good eats, and music playing all night. Awards and prizes were given away at the end of the night for those who were able to raise the most money or walked for the longest amount of time. Last year, Kent raised a larger sum of money than initially anticipated, due to participation of over 250 members of the community. Miss Lerchen, college advisor and dorm head of Middle Dorm South, organizes Relay for Life at Kent reflects, “given that last year was our first year, the event went on without a hitch, with great weather and several people who walked the whole night.”
As Middle Dorm South’s community service project, Relay for Life is known for being a fun and important event. Since the start of the 2009-2010 school year, Miss Lerchen and the five girls who form the MDS Community Service Committee have been collaborating endlessly with Alice Leonard, the Connecticut representative of the American Cancer Society, in planning this year’s Relay for Life. With events such as a bake sale and a dress down day, the girls of MDS wanted to raise awareness about the event as well as the causes of cancer. Fighting cancer is an especially important cause for the school, for it has affected many members of the Kent community, as demonstrated during last year’s Luminaria ceremony. Even though Relay for Life at Kent guarantees a wonderful time during the course of the evening, the members of the school do not forget the main mission: to become educated about and to help combat cancer.
The event was a great success, not only in terms of fundraising, but by raising awareness and giving students a final night of great fun before exams.
