The Kent School Robotics Team was awarded a NASA sponsored grant for its participation in the FIRST Robotics Alliance Project Competition.
FIRST- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology- is a nationwide program that focuses on motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math while building life skills. The competition teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard kit of parts and a common set of rules.
The Program Growth grant provides funding to cover registration and costs for the Kent Robotics Team to attend a regional competition event. More than 1,500 teams and 37,000 students from around the world and every state in the U.S. compete at regional events to vie for a chance to win it all in the championships in Atlanta.
This year, students and their mentors are to design and build a remote-control robot capable of playing a game.
According to its website, FIRST “redefines winning for these students because they are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.”
