No Place Like Home- Students Lend A Hand

Kent students’ sense of community and the importance of service extend beyond the campus to the local neighborhoods and the greater Kent community through numerous community service opportunities.

KENT Students Lend a HandThroughout the school year Kent's Borsdorff Hall "adopts" two elderly women in town. The students in the dorm assist with outdoor tasks that would be otherwise difficult or impossible for the ladies to accomplish; for example, raking leaves, clearing brush and weeding.

Not only do the students help with clean up, they also form a special bond with the women who share their life stories with the boys. One grew up in town and recounts life in Kent over the last 80 years. The students also learn about life abroad from their other "adoptee" who fought with the resistance in Hungary during World War II before emigrating to the United States and is proud to share her letter from President Eisenhower commending her for her service.

Beyond making a positive impact, community service helps students learn about themselves and become more knowledgeable about local and world issues.
