Williams dominated the face-off “x” in Kent’s wins on the road against Albany Academy and Trinity-Pawling during the final week of the regular season. Seherr-Thoss, though playing through a separated shoulder injury, scored five goals against Trinity-Pawling to lead the Lions to a 15-13 victory.

The only freshman on her varsity team, Ali Lospinuso has been a contributor on attack throughout the season. She has scored a goal in each of Kent School's last three games, and she is a tough competitor in the midfield. Lospinuso's work was particularly noteworthy in her team's penultimate game, against Kingswood-Oxford. She came up with the ball off the draw numerous times, helping to lead the Lions to a strong 16-10 finish. Said head coach Liza Davis, "This was a big win for the team, and we couldn’t have done it without Ali."

On Mothers' Day, May 14, at the Southern New England Tennis League tournament, Mike Benson won the third singles flight. The sophomore from New Milford, CT defeated the second seeded Oat Naviroj of Taft, 6-3,6-3, his Westminster counterpart 7-6, 6-3 in the semi-finals, and Salisbury's # 3 to win the flight. In the final, Mike Benson had to overcome multiple leg cramps to win a tight third set with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory. Kent head coach Jim MacLeod called Benson's day "a gutsy performance."

Dan Alfredson

April 30-May 6, 2006

Sixth former Dan Alfredson has been a guiding light for the JV baseball team this year. Said head coach Todd Marble, Alfredson “has provided outstanding leadership, supporting younger players while working hard to improve his skills and those of his teammates.” Those efforts kept it close against Taft on April 26; he hit a towering 3-run home run in the 5th inning to knot the score at 6-6 (Taft prevailed 9-6). Then, in the following Saturday’s 21-11 victory over Berkshire, he started on the mound, earning the team’s first victory of the season, and backed his strong pitching with another home run and two triples – accounting for 8 of Kent’s runs.

Jenny So

April 30-May 6, 2006

Her teammates and coaches have started calling Jenny So the Monster-on-the-Mound. With strike-outs and deft defensive plays—and some fine work at the plate—the sophomore has been a key player throughout the season. On Saturday, May 6, So helped her team to a win at home against Berkshire, 11-5, with a tremendous effort on the mound. After trailing 4-0 for the first three innings, the team rallied and, with two outs, earned an impressive 10 runs in the fourth inning. So accounted for two RBI. Then, on the mound, So held Berkshire scoreless. She had seven strike-outs for the game, and she fielded two hits to first base for two other outs. The Monster-on-the-Mound is also known to her coaches as "a commanding leader."

Adam Ferguson
Varsity Golf
April 23-29, 2006

Adam Ferguson led the varsity golf team to a big win over Gunnery on April 29 at Stoneybrook Golf Course in Litchfield. While the rest of the team was really struggling, Ferguson picked up the slack with his medalist score of 77 to lead Kent past Gunnery by just three shots (433-430). Kent needed a big performance, and Ferguson delivered. The sixth former hails from Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Nora Parry
Girls Varsity Lacrosse
April 9-15, 2006

A new member of Kent's girls varsity lacrosse team, Nora Parry has already contributed a great deal to its attack. On April 12, the team opened its season with a win over Westover on the road. Parry scored three goals and one assist in the effort. Four day s later she tallied an impressive six goals and two assists as Kent won its home opener against Canterbury. Head coach Liza Davis called Parry "incredibly consistent, both in the midfield and on attack," someone to whom the team will look as the season's challenges mount.

Nick Wijnberg
Boys Varsity Tennis
April 16-23, 2006

Co-captain Nick Wijnberg led the way to a hard fought 4-2 team victory over Deerfield on April 22. Most of Kent’s top players had to come from behind to win in their third sets; Wijnberg, however, was dominant. At second doubles he and Mike Benson won 8-1; at second singles, Wijnberg beat Deerfield’s very good #2 player 6-1, 6-0. He then was instrumental in cheering on his teammates in their come-from-behind wins, offering good advice and encouragement and then congratulating each. Coach Jim MacLeod called it “plain and simple, a terrific day for Nick and also a terrific day for Kent boys varsity tennis.”

Evee Elswick
Varsity Softball
April 16-23, 2006

Evee Elswick, captain of the varsity softball team, pitched a three-hitter in a 9-2 Kent victory over Millbrook. Czerkowicz was selected to play in the Hockey Night in Boston All Scholastic Tournament, and he was selected to the All Founders League team. Czerkowicz is a sixth former from Blackstone, MA.

He improved as the season wore on, and in the last 11 games of the year he had a 2.42 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage. Rank was described by a rival coach as the only goalie in the league who won games for his team. He was selected to play in the Hockey Night in Boston All Scholastic Tournament, and he was selected to the All Founders League team and as the goaltender on the All New England All-Star team. Rank is a sixth former from Islip, NY.

Haley Smith

Smith led the attack from the point guard position, pouring in 19 points, her highest output of the year. Head coach John Perkins said recently, "Haley has been a great leader and a great captain all year long." During Smith's four-year tenure, the JV team amassed a 40-22 record.

Chase Englehart
Boys JV Squash
Feb. 12-18, 2006

His coach thinks that Chase Englehart is "probably the best seventh man in the league." In that crucial slot, Englehart has lost only one match in a dozen contests, and his recent wins over Avon and Millbrook were impressive. Said Mr. Hunt, Englehart's "competitive fire, sportsmanship, and court savvy make him a pleasure to watch and coach." Chase Englehart is a fifth former at Kent from Ketchum, Idaho.

Sara Gordon
Girls’ JV Basketbal
February 5-11, 2006 l

Sara Gordon has been the mainstay of the Kent offense this season, and she is a major contributor to the success of the team (13-0). In the last week, against two quality opponents (Hotchkiss and Kingswood-Oxford), Sara scored 31 points, helping Kent to surprisingly easy wins. She is also the leader in “possessions gained,” which include rebounds, steals, and forced turnovers. She is averaging 11 points per game and more than 14 possessions gained. Said head coach John Perkins, "Sara's concentration, her work ethic, and her positive attitude have been inspirational to her teammates."

Ivy Perkins
Boys JV Basketball
February 5-11, 2006

Ivy Perkins scored a season-best 18 points on Monday, February 6 against the Berkshire Bears. Head coach Jonathan Voorhees also had high praise for Perkins's "tenacious" defense; Perkins leads his team in steals. The co-captain is also second on the team in both scoring and assists. Voorhees said that in his "leadership and intensity" Perkins "has set an example for the team."

Shannon Dickson
Girls Varsity Basketball
January 22-28, 2006

In a match-up with Westover, Shannon Dickson notched a season-high 10pts and collected five rebounds. Just as important, she played, in the estimation of head coach Wayne Walton, “stellar defense” in the win. Dickson, a sixth-former from St. James, Jamaica, will be captain of girls varsity tennis this spring.

Kris Setness
Boys Thirds Basketball
January 22-28, 2006

In a tight game against Berkshire's Bears, Kent was down by one point with time running out. Kris Setness, a third-former starter from Torrington, CT, put up a three-point shot, which he sank at the buzzer, giving Kent the win, 43-41. Said head coach Jim MacLeod, "Kris definitely has a deadly three-point shot, and he passes the ball extremely well." MacLeod called Setness "a leading player for his team from the beginning of the season." Kent's thirds team has a 6-1 season record.

Mark Cheong
Boys JV Basketbal
lJan. 15-21, 2006

Mark Cheong has provided a spark off the bench for the JV boys basketball team. His 10 points against Berkshire on January 21 made him the high scorer of the game, and he is hitting the three-point shot on a regular basis, shooting above 50% from beyond the arc.

Sasha Dosenko
Girls Varsity Basketbal
lJan. 15-21, 2006

In two consecutive Kent wins, Sasha Dosenko was a standout. As Kent edged Taft, 39-36, Dosenko had 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. Against Berkshire, she notched 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots. Dosenko, who hails from the Ukraine, is a fourth former playing her second season with the varsity team.

Roxanne Garrity
Girls JV Ice Hockey
Jan. 8-14, 2006

The team that took the ice for Kent in its match-up with Simsbury was depleted by illness and injury. Their ace in the hole was goalkeeper Roxanne Garrity. Said head coach Jesse Klingebiel, "from the first drop of the puck, Roxanne minded the nets as if she owned them."  As her remaining teammates struggled to get the offense going, Garrity made over 70 saves on the afternoon.  Her play, said Klingebiel, was "without question the key" to Kent's 3-2 victory.

Brian DeDonato
Boys JV Ice Hockey
Jan. 8-14, 2006

Brian DeDonato stopped 30 shots for Kent, including five breakaways in the final period, as the Lions defeated Avon Old Farms 2-1 in a January 14 game. Head coach Ryan Seymour called DeDonato's play the deciding factor in the game. DeDonato, a fourth former, hails from Salisbury, CT.

Michael Boller
Boys JV Basketball
January 1 - 6, 2006

As one of the JV boys basketball team captains, Michael Boller has provided leadership for the team, 1-2 in its first three games. Boller scored 8 points in the season opener against Canterbury, and then followed with 17 points against Choate. The JV team got its first win, against Loomis Chaffee, as Boller again scored 17 points. Said head coach Fr. Voorhees, "His contributions on the offensive and defensive ends were crucial in the win against our rivals."
Alison Lospinuso
Girls JV Hockey
January 1 - 6, 2006

In addition to scoring both of Kent's goals in a 7-2 loss to Loomis, Ali Lospinuso ’09 put in a great effort on defense. Never using the score as an excuse, she skated her hardest right through the end of the game, making several key saves in the third period. Assistant coach Krista Falcone called Lospinuso "a welcome voice in the locker room as well as on the ice."

Meghan Kelly
Girls Varsity Soccer

For the past three years, Meghan Kelly has been one of the top defensive players for Kent's girls varsity soccer team. Kelly concluded her regular-season high school career with "two of her finest games," in the estimation of head coach Jesse Klingebiel. Against Gunnery she "shut down their offense" and distributed the ball smartly, repeatedly finding her teammates for penetrating runs. Against Loomis she consistently marked up their leading scorer, a two-time Maine All-State striker (certain to be CT All-State this year). With patience, quickness and great concentration, Kelly repeatedly thwarted the Pelican's efforts to move down the flanks. Kent played well in the loss to the Loomis, the best team in New England, and Kelly's efforts were crucial. Her team will begin its pursuit of the New England Championships with a post-season game against Exeter.

Phil Stevens
Boys Thirds Soccer

The thirds soccer team closed out its 2005 season with a hard-fought tie against the Loomis Pelicans. Kent scored early, but Loomis responded, driving into the Kent goal area and generating a penalty shot against Kent goalkeeper Phil Stevens. Stevens smothered a worm-burner with a dive to his left. A short time later, a Loomis attacker blasted a shot toward the right side netting, and Phil flew to his right, knocking the shot wide of the net. In the hotly contested second half, Loomis scored once and then earned another penalty shot. The Loomis forward shot high and hard, but Stevens leapt to his right, blocking and collecting the ball to preserve a 1-1 draw. Stevens’s brilliant saves inspired his teammates, and his huge punts helped generate many scoring chances toward the end of the match. Stevens, a fifth former in his second year at Kent School, hails from Fairfield, CT.

Austin Douglas
Varsity Football
Oct. 30-Nov. 5, 2005

Austin Douglas has won the Top Blocking Award for the Kent School Lions every week this season – an outstanding accomplishment. His stellar play on both the offensive and defensive lines has helped lead the Lion’s resurgence: the team is in position to claim a second-place finish in the most challenging league in New England. The strongest testament to Douglas’s abilities is that opposing teams are shifting their fronts to account for him. Despite that attention, he is among Kent's defensive statistical leaders (rare for a defensive lineman) and, said head coach Todd Marble, "arguably the finest lineman in the league and one of the best in New England." Coach Marble also lauded Douglas's "team-first attitude and outstanding effort each day."

Liv Powers
Varsity Field Hockey
Oct. 30-Nov. 5, 2005

Liv Powers was a big part of Kent's performance in what head coach Liza Davis called "two great games," a close loss and a win. In the first, after falling 0-3 to Choate in the first half, the Powers and her defensive teammates held the Boars scoreless in the second half. The Kent girls had a few key opportunities to tie up the game, falling short in the end, 2-3. In the following game, versus Westover, the Kent defense made it very difficult for Westover to get near the cage, allowing only one goal. Powers has been on the field for the Lions for nearly every minute of the season, and, said Coach Davis, "the team has really relied on her steady stick and smart decision making." Powers, a fifth-form student at Kent School, hails from Larchmont, NY.

Harry Glynne
Boys Varsity Cross-Country
Oct. 23 - 29, 2005

Harry Glynne didn't make much of a first impression on the cross country coaches when he arrived at Kent School as a new fourth former. Said head coach Jeremy Sokolnicki, "Harry didn't seem like much of a runner at our first practice, or for much of the first week, for that matter. It wasn't until our scrimmage against HVRHS that Harry showed what he was made of. He is a very tough, focused, and resilient young man, who has the ability to do in races just what he needs to do - run hard, regardless of conditions." Glynne has earned a spot on the varsity roster, among some great racers, through hard work.

Shannon Engel
Girls JV Soccer
Oct. 23 - 29, 2005

Captain Shannon Engel has played outside fullback for several years, but she made the adjustment to sweeper at midseason, when a teammate's injury forced the squad to reshuffle. Engel learned her new job quickly. Her performance against a strong Williston team kept the score at a 0-0 tie, but it was her play against Taft that head coach Anne O'Keeffe called "absolutely stellar." Said O'Keeffe, "Shannon’s quick adjustments and breaks on the ball kept Taft from having many easy scoring opportunities, even though the ball was predominantly in our defensive half of the field." Though Taft eventually won the game 1-0, O'Keeffe called it the best game of Engel's Kent School career.

Jayde Bennett
Girls JV Soccer
Oct. 16-22, 2005

Goalkeeper Jayde Bennett has notched four shut-outs in six games; she has a goals-allowed percentage of 0.5 per game. Coach Anne O'Keeffe called her work in a game against Hotchkiss "simply spectacular," adding, "Even the opposing team and fans were awed by her athletic prowess." Bennett's defense of the net has helped her team to a 5-1 record.

Alex Shipper
Boys Varsity Soccer
Oct. 9-15, 2005

Head coach Steve Robey had this to say about goalkeeper Alex Shipper's role in Kent's 1-0 victory over Brunswick: "Alex came up huge." Shipper's efforts in the goal, along with strong efforts from the rest of the defense, kept the score at 0-0 through the first half of the match.  Twenty minutes into the second half, Kent took a 1-0 lead.  Brunswick redoubled its offensive efforts, and Shipper had to make many impressive saves to preserve the victory for the Lions.  In a tough early season for Kent, co-captain Shipper has, said Robey, continued to lead by example through his work ethic in practice and focus on making the defense better every day.

Katie Halleck
Girls Varsity Soccer
Oct. 2 - 8, 2005

Katie Halleck has battled back aggressively from injuries to become the varsity team’s second leading scorer. In a victory over Millbrook October 5, the opposing coaches recognized her as a player of the game, as did her own. Kent’s head coach Jesse Klingebiel called Halleck “a fiery competitor.” From her forward position, Halleck made things difficult for Millbrook throughout the game and hit one shot so hard that it went through the keeper’s hands. Kent’s record stands at 5-0-1.

Ryan Snyder
Boys Varsity Cross-Country
Sept. 25 - Oct. 1, 2005

Third-former Ryan Snyder has already shown that he can keep up with the mileage and other demands of varsity cross-country running. In fact, at Westminster he was the second boy across the line for Kent. Head coach Jeremy Sokolnicki calls him "a young man of great character, strong work ethic, and focus." He continued, "Though it’s too soon to start talking about PR’s and course records, the coaches are excited by the outlook."

Kerry McKenna
Girls Varsity Soccer
Sept. 18 - 24, 2005

As Kent started its season with two 2-1 wins over Canterbury and Suffield Academy, Kerry McKenna was involved in every tally, scoring a goal and assist in each game; McKenna was selected by both opposing coaches as Kent's player of the game.  Her own head coach Jesse Klingebiel called McKenna "a versatile player who adjusts herself well to the needs of our team," one who matches her passion for the game with an outstanding work ethic.

Sean Kiernan
Boys Varsity Cross-Country
Sept. 18 - 24, 2005

Sixth-form captain Sean Kiernan is off to a fast start this year. At the Canterbury Invitational, he set his season-baseline pace significantly higher than last year’s, setting a personal best time for the Canterbury course in the process. Said head coach Jeremy Sokolnicki, We look forward to great things for Sean in his senior year at Kent.”
