Athletes of the Week
Justine McLaughlin
Girls Varsity Lacrosse
May 15-21, 2005

Goalkeeper Justine McLaughlin has been a major asset in a recent string of victories for the varsity squad. Head coach Liza Davis called McLaughlin "very much the deciding factor" in at least two very close wins, over Ms. Porter's and Millbrook. McLaughlin also blocked almost every free-position shot taken against her by Kingswood-Oxford, who fell to Kent, 8-6. These efforts are typical of her. Said Coach Davis, "Justine has really stepped up this season and had a great year. The last games have certainly been examples of that."

James Lavinskas
Varsity Baseball
May 8-14, 2005

James Lavinskas had a breakout week for the varsity baseball team, going 5-for-10 with 2 homeruns, 1 stolen base, and 4 RBIs. His two homeruns were key turning points for Kent in wins over Trinity-Pawling and Cheshire Academy. Lavinskas plays third base for the Lions, where, said head coach Dan Zurolo, he has "done an outstanding job all season making difficult plays look rather easy."

Antonia Zahn
Girls Varsity Tennis
May 8-14, 2005

Antonia Zahn clinched her team’s victory in Kent's match against Kingswood-Oxford, coming back from a first-set loss by winning the next two sets in tie-breakers (1-6, 7-5, 7-6). In the third-set tiebreaker, she was down 3-2 but won the next 5 points for her match—and the match for Kent, 4-3. Playing in front of a partisan crowd, Zahn maintained her composure in what head coach Rob Ober called “one of the greatest comebacks in Kent girls tennis history.” Her win moved Kent's season record to 9-3.

Anita Mohan
JV Softball
May 1-7, 2005

In Kent's extra-inning loss to Berkshire, Anita Mohan pitched a great game. She threw 154 pitches, striking out 9 batters. On the other side of the plate, she hit a 2 RBI home run, giving Kent the lead for three innings. Said head coach David Greene, "Anita kept us in the game the whole way."

Ben Cook
Varsity Golf
May 1-7, 2005

Ben Cook was the match medalist in a match against Avon, Berkshire, and South Kent on May 7. The fifth former from Prince Edward Island shot a 78 at Wyantenuck Country Club, in Great Barrington, MA. Praised by his coaches for his passion for the game, Cook led his team as captain and on the course.

Zach Furshman
Boys Varsity Lacrosse
April 24-30, 2005

In the opinion of head coach Randy Hobbs, Zach Furshman played the "best game of his career" on Saturday, April 30 vs. Avon. The sixth-form goalkeeper had 17 saves and allowed just 9 goals. Furshman has a save percentage of over 60% for the year, excellent in the sport of lacrosse. He also scored his second goal of the year on an end-to-end run out of the cage. Hobbs called Furshman "a stable force in the net this year—he makes outstanding clearing plays."

Justin Williams
Boys Varsity Lacrosse
April 18-24, 2005

Justin Williams scored 9 goals in one week, including 6 against Northfield Mount Herman on Saturday, April 23. After overcoming an injury early in the season, Williams has improved with every game. So said head coach Randy Hobbs, who called Williams "a confident shooter who will be asked to take on an even larger role as the boys lacrosse team moves into the heart of their schedule."

Caroline Thomas
Girls Varsity Lacrosse
April 18-24, 2005

Caroline Thomas, a four-year starter for the varsity team, continues to be a tremendous asset to the program. In addition to her goal production (she's averaging four per game), her leadership on the field has kept her team focused in three convincing wins and in its first loss, a strong showing against league-leading Westminster. Head coach Liza Davis said, "Caroline is off to a great start, and I am confident that the team will continue to look to her in crucial game-time situations in the weeks ahead."

Jennifer So
JV Softball
April 3-9, 2005

Softball was completely new to Jennifer So when she tried out for the JV team this spring. She had to learn how to throw and catch a ball, but her athleticism soon had her playing second base, confidently fielding every hit that came her way. So, a third former from Hong Kong, has impressed head coach David Greene with her consistent efforts and rapid improvement.

Evee Elswick
Varsity Softball
April 10 - 16, 2005

Evee Elswick pitched a one-hitter against Westover on April 13, leading Kent’s varsity softball team to its first victory of the young season. Elswick, a junior from Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, has pitched every inning of every game since her arrival as a freshman (she threw a no-hitter against Taft that first year).

Colin Benko
Boys Varsity Lacrosse
April 10 - 16, 2005

On April 16, Colin Benko notched 3 goals and 6 assists, leading Kent to a 16-8 win over Kingswood-Oxford.  The sixth former has averaged more than four points per game for the first five games of the season.  Head coach Randy Hobbs called Benko "the field general of our offense." Benko, said the coach, "has a strong work ethic in practice and plays with great intensity whenever he takes the field."

Tim Anderson
Brooks Gerli
Boys Varsity Swimming
Feb. 20-26, 2005

Head coach Tim Carey nominated two juniors as Athletes of the Week after their performances at the Connecticut Championships. Tim Anderson (top), who had consistently improved his season-best times, landed a 9th place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.97 and a top-6 finish in the 500 freestyle at 5:10.68.

Brooks Gerli (bottom) has also has had a great year so far, recently lowering his time in the 50 freestyle to under 23 seconds – a very impressive task. With his speed, Gerli was able to land a 6th place finish in the 100 freestyle with a 50.39, his personal best.

Both Anderson and Gerli were members of the 400 freestyle relay that finished 6th overall at the end of the meet. Said Carey, "It’s great to think that we’ll have another great year with them at the helm as seniors."

Ellie Pardoe
Girls JV Basketball
Feb. 20-26, 2005

Ellie Pardoe was recently named the season MVP for the Kent girls JV basketball team. Pardoe, a fourth former from New York City, led the team in total points (103) and in total minutes played. She also managed to lead in possessions gained (rebounds plus steals) with 176, dominating the boards at both ends of the court while committing only 17 fouls in 16 games.

Seung Kyu Yim
Boys Thirds Basketball
Feb. 13-19, 2005

Seung Kyu Yim led the boys thirds basketball team to its finest half of the season against an Avon team that came into the game with a 10-5 record. Yim got his inside game going, scoring basket after basket in a spectacular performance and helping Kent to a 20-point halftime lead, which proved to be the difference in the game. Yim had worked hard on his inside shots during practices, preparing himself for a performance that head coach Jim MacLeod called "nearly flawless."

Drew Davis
Swimming and Diving
Feb. 6-12, 2005

On January 12, Drew Davis smashed the pool record and school record at Kent School. In a meet against the visiting Avon team, he scored 222.950, breaking the previous school record by ten points. Head coach Eston Woodard said Davis "nailed every single dive." Indeed, Davis earned 7.5s, scores rarely seen in high school competition.
Sasha Dosenko
Girls Varsity Basketball
Feb. 6-12, 2005

Sasha Dosenko, a freshman from Kiev, Russia, has been a remarkably versatile player for Kent’s varsity girls basketball team. Dosenko began the season as a 6’3” shooting guard, but she recently accepted a new assignment as center. It is a role in which she has “stepped up big,” according to head coach Kendra Galusha. In a recent match-up with Taft, she had 8 pts, 8 blocked shots (!) and 8 rebounds.

The JV Girls’ Basketball Team

Kent’s JV girls team hadn't overcome Taft's Rhinos since January of 1998, and that was in double overtime. They'd lost a heartbreaker by one point just two weeks before. The meeting between the teams on February 2 was similarly even on the floor, but Kent shot extremely well in their many trips to the foul line to outdistance Taft 43-29.

Drew Mulvey
Swimming and Diving
Jan 23-29, 2005

Drew Mulvey placed first in two consecutive meets, diving against teams from Canterbury and Miss Porter's School. Mulvey, a Kent School sixth-form student from Bridgewater, CT, scored a season-best 227 against Canterbury and slightly over 206 in the diving meet against Miss Porter’s School.

Rachel Cleveland
Girls Varsity Basketball
Jan 16-22, 2005

Facing Taft on January 19, Kent was missing a player who usually controls the paint. The team needed a big effort. Fellow sixth-form starter Rachel Cleveland came through with a double-double (10 pts, 13 rebounds). Cleveland has been a key player for the varsity team this season.

Adam Ferguson
Boys JV Hockey
Jan 02-08, 2005

Ferguson scored two goals in Kent School’s 4-3 road win over Loomis on January 8. Head coach Matt Greason said Ferguson’s steady play both on the power play and when the sides were even was vital to Kent’s success. Said Greason, “Adam has not only evolved into one of our most skilled and reliable players, but he has also become a team leader in the locker room and on the ice. The team will continue to look to Adam for his strong play and leadership as we have a very tough schedule ahead.”

Leandra Heller
Girls Varsity Basketball
Jan 02-08, 2005

Leandra Heller, a junior from Brewster, NY, had a career-high 15 points versus a tough Loomis squad on January 8. Heller’s shooting accounted for one third of Kent’s point production in the 53-45 loss. Heller, a consistent starter this season, has become “a key player” for the varsity squad, said head coach Kendra Galusha.

Stewart Phillips
Boys JV Squash
Dec 05-11, 2004

Down 0-2 to a tough Millbrook opponent, Phillips refused to give up, and he came back to win three very close games. He was down 3-7 in the fourth game, which he won 9-8. He won the last game 9-7. Head coach Tom Hunt called it “an epic match and a gutsy performance.”

Candace Turnbull
Girls Varsity Ice Hockey
Dec 05-11, 2004

Challenged by two powerful offensive teams in the first two games of the season, co-captain and goalie Candace Turnbull began her season with two very impressive performances. Facing 44 shots against Berkshire, one of the top teams in New England, Turnbull made 40 saves, many of them from point-blank range. Later that week, against Westminster, she stopped 31 of the 35 shots on her. Kent had fallen behind Westminster 4-2 after two periods, but Turnbull stopped the Westminster attack cold in the third period. Her stellar play in net helped spark the Lions to come back and tie Westminster with two goals in the period. Turnbull made two more saves in overtime, and the game ended tied at 4. She’s off to a great start in her third year as the varsity hockey team’s starting goalie.

Caroline Thomas
Girls Varsity Soccer
10/31/04 - 11/06/04

Head coach Jesse Klingebiel had high praise for Caroline Thomas, who, he said, “with characteristic enthusiasm and dedication, played yet another week of outstanding soccer.” From her central midfield position, Thomas helped dictate the flow of play against Choate, who nevertheless won a tightly contested game 1-0 on Wednesday, Nov. 3. In so doing, she helped neutralize both of Choate’s all-state-nominated midfielders and set up many opportunities for Kent. The following Saturday, against a less challenging opponent, Thomas’s settled play kept Kent in possession of the ball, and she set up several scoring chances in the first half. In the second, she stepped into the goal and kept Westover out of the net (a penalty shot did get by her, but it was a great shot). Coach Klingebiel especially appreciated that Thomas’s “positive attitude is effective in keeping others focused, and Caroline has been positive throughout the season.”

Andre Geraghty
Varsity Football
10/31/04 - 11/06/04

Varsity football’s leading statistical defensive player, Andre Geraghty had another outstanding performance in Kent’s 49-24 victory over a talented Hotchkiss team. (The win clinched the Erickson League Championship for Kent.) Geraghty recorded 1 assisted and 3 unassisted tackles, along with a QB sack, fumble caused, fumble recovered, and pass breakup. Playing outside linebacker, he has been a stalwart on that side of the ball throughout the season. On offense, Geraghty has also shined as a runner, blocker, and pass receiver. His leadership, outstanding work ethic, and selfless attitude have played a key role in Kent’s six-game winning streak.

Jordan Pyers
Varsity Field Hockey
10/24/04 - 10/30/04

Jordan Pyers has been not only a starter but also the leading scorer on the varsity field hockey team for all of her four years at Kent. In one of her finest moments, Pyers scored the winning goal in Kent's emotional 3-2 victory over Taft on Saturday, October 30. Said coach Liza Davis, "Her greatest strength is her ability to push herself 100% until the end of the game, which she clearly did on Saturday, punching in the last goal with two minutes remaining to give us the lead after coming from behind." Kent had lost to Taft in overtime in each of the two previous years, so this was a particularly big win for the team. The victory over Taft gives Kent's varsity field hockey team (11-1) great position heading towards the playoffs.

Jean-Philippe Binette
Varsity Football
10/24/04 - 10/30/04

As a tackle on both sides of the ball, JP Binette helps anchor the offensive and defensive lines for the 5-2 Kent School Lions. Consistently graded the best blocker on Kent’s offensive line, he helped lead a dominating rushing attack in a home game versus Taft on October 30. Kent’s offensive line, under the direction of coach Ed Dunn, has worked hard and is beginning to gel-just in time for key league games at season-end. Along with Binette, Ben Silver, James Lavinskas, Bennett Gerli, Julien Bergeron-Cote, and Andres Soriano comprise a unit that is earning respect throughout New England for its heart, technique, and tenaciousness.

Kerry McKenna
Girls Varsity Soccer
10/17/04 - 10/23/04

The outstanding play of Kerry McKenna has proved the difference for the Kent varsity team all season long, a fact recognized by her coaches and her opponents’ coaches alike. Most recently, when Kent was forced to rally from 0-2 against Hotchkiss, one of her many attacking runs set up Kent's first goal. Later, she used her blazing speed to finish off the tying goal herself. Her offensive output was even more impressive given that, through much of the game, she had dropped back to support the defense, which had been decimated by illness and injury. Said head coach Jesse Klingebiel, “Kerry is not just a flashy forward; her defensive play is tenacious, and she wins the ball back with her smart tackling and timing.” Against Greenwich Academy later the same week, McKenna assisted Kent’s first goal on a great corner kick, and she scored the second and third goals with breakaway runs. That game ended 4-0, improving the team’s record to 6-3-1.

Ryan Lidrazzah
Varsity Football
10/17/04 - 10/23/04

Ryan Lidrazzah has been a “quiet” sensation for Kent’s football team throughout the season. On Saturday, October 23, he helped spark a 38-10 victory over previously unbeaten Westminster with 105 rushing yards on 14 carries (a 7.5 yard average) and a brilliant touchdown reception accounting for another 24 yards. His 151 total offensive yards for the game brought his season total to 735. Lidrazzah tallied two of Kent’s five touchdowns (more points were scored on Westminster than by their four prior opponents combined). On defense, he shut down the opponent's top receiver- something he has done throughout the season. Rarely leaving the field, Lidrazzah has a keen understanding of the game; he has even called two key plays on his own in the past two games. One resulted in a touchdown, and the other set up a game-winning score.

Patricia Malfitano and Ann Peters
Girls JV Soccer
10/10/04 - 10/16/04

Pati Malfitano and Ann Peters have been the anchors of an outstanding defense for the JV soccer team. Malfitano has controlled the field from her stopper position, and Ann, at sweeper, has taken care of most anyone who penetrated Kent's defensive line. Both have helped to keep opposing teams down to a total of 6 goals in 8 games -- Kent has scored 23 goals. These leaders on the field form the core of a very successful 6-1-1 JV team.

Raleigh Gallington
Boys Varsity Soccer
10/10/04 - 10/16/04

Raleigh Gallington '05 scored his second hat-trick of the year in Kent’s win over Canterbury on Saturday, October 16, raising his season total to ten goals. He has scored with his head on crosses, with his feat in dead ball situations and on shots from the box. Gallington's skill, subtle touch, and power continue to generate goals and frustrate opponents.

Emily Reynolds
Girls Varsity Cross Country
10/03/04 - 10/09/04

Sophomore Emily Reynolds was recently called by Coach Michelle O'Brien "our MVP again this season." Reynolds has two first-place finishes, one second, and two thirds in meets against Housatonic, Westminster, Choate, Hotchkiss, and Deerfield. Against 162 runners at the Canterbury Invitational, she finished 16th. She's not only fast, but also a pleasure to coach. Said O'Brien, "She works hard in every practice, never complains, cooperates, and puts in her all all of the time."

Phil Warren
Varsity Football
10/03/04 - 10/09/04

In Kent’s come-from-behind 28-25 victory over Avon Old Farms on October 9, Phil Warren excelled on both sides of the ball, as he has done throughout the season. Warren rushed for 179 yards on 21 carries, scoring 2 touchdowns. In four games, he is averaging 8.3 yards per rush with 497 total yards. Defensively versus Avon, Warren recorded 2 unassisted and 2 assisted tackles, along with a quarterback sack and pass deflection. He is also, according to head coach Todd Marble, "a tremendous blocker," providing the “point-of-attack” block for much of Kent’s run offense. Even more than his on-field accomplishments, Warren's coaches laud his hard work and “team-first” attitude. He has earned the respect of teammates, opponents, and coaches.

Stephanie Underwood
Kent School Equestrian Team
09/26/04 - 10/03/04

Stephanie Underwood '07 placed third in nation at the Marshall & Sterling League National Indoor Finals. Riding Sago Lily in the $10,000 Children's Jumper Classic, Underwood first cleared an eleven-obstacle course to advance with eighteen other riders to the jump-off. In the final round, she was one of only three riders to score clear rounds with all the rails up.

Candace Turnbull
Varsity Field Hockey
09/19/04 - 09/26/04

Candace Turnbull made the varsity field hockey team as a field player, but after the starting goalie was injured-just days before the season opener-Turnbull stepped in and posted two shut-outs, saving 8 shots against the Gunnery and 11 against Ms. Porter’s. Coach Liza Davis called Turnbull’s stop-gap efforts typical of her hard work and positive attitude.

Harry Seherr-Thoss
Boys JV Soccer Team
09/19/04 - 09/26/04

Kent's JV boys soccer team was down 2-0 to Choate after the first half of a home game played Friday, September 24. The team rallied, winning 3-2 in a remarkable comeback. Coach Rob Ober had particular praise for Harry Seherr-Thoss, who led the team scoring with two goals in that second half and played "with great poise, heart, and courage."
