“The excellent efforts of the boys Varsity Swim Team have culminated in a tremendous second place finish at the 2010 Founder’s League Championship.”

“Shaw Bridges exemplifies the strong work ethic of the team. His efforts during the practices leading up to championship week paid off handsomely, with 4 personal best swims.”

“Shaw dropped his time as a member of the 200 yard relay (butterfly), 100 fly, 100 backstroke, and an incredible drop of nearly 2 seconds in his leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay. This relay was off the nearly 20 year-old school record by less than two-tenths of a second!”

Terrific job, Shaw!

Drew Brown '11

DREW BROWN ‘11
KENT VARSITY HOCKEY

Drew Brown is this week’s male “Athlete of the Week”.
Assistant coach Garrison Smith writes,

“Junior forward Drew Brown scored either a goal or an assist on seven of the eight goals in two recent victories over Berkshire and Trinity-Pawling. Against Berkshire, Brown scored the first two goals of the game, and assisted on the game winner.”

“Against T.P., he added a “hat trick” (3 goals), as well as an assist. With just 3 minutes remaining, Brown beat the defense, and went on a breakaway, faking to his forehand, then to his backhand. Brown then found the open corner, when he moved again to his forehand, sliding the puck in for the game-winner.”

“Drew is a tough competitor with great speed, and a knack for finding the back of the net. He is a worthy choice as “Athlete of the Week”.

Congratulations, Drew!

Kerry Foster '11

“On Saturday, Kerry played another solid game in goal, earning her first shutout of the season, a 5-0 blanking of Millbrook. She had 2 break-away stops, and a kick save late in the third period where she flashed her pad out to deflect a strong shot that looked destined for the back of the net.”

“It is a pleasure to work with Kerry every day, and her game improvement this season follows a focused practice effort, and intelligent self-analysis of her performance.”

Congratulations, Kerry!!!

John Roper '11

JOHN ROPER ‘11
KENT J.V. BASKETBALL

2/8 - 2/13

Boys J.V. basketball coach Mike Benjamin has nominated John Roper as this week’s male “Athlete of the Week”.

“John has led by example this season, working hard in practice to improve all aspects of his game. Last week against Avon, John outworked and outplayed Avon’s big men, grabbing rebounds with ease, and blocking or redirecting numerous shots. He also threw down an impressive dunk that spurred the team to a comfortable 16-point victory.”

“At Kingswood on Saturday, John collected 11 rebounds, blocked 4 shots, and with teammates Raffi Morales, George Ughetta. Bryan Kynnap, and Tom Mangels, disrupted almost all of the Wyvern’s attempts to penetrate inside the 3-point arc.”

“With 10 seconds left, and Kent trailing by a point, John stepped to the foul line, and icily sunk both shots, delivering a thrilling 52-51 victory.”

“Kudos to John, and to the rest of the J.V. team!”

Matt Ross /12

MATT ROSS ‘12
KENT 3RD BASKETBALL
1/24 - 1/30

Boys 3rds basketball coach Jim MacLeod has nominated Matt Ross as this week’s male “Athlete of the Week”.

“Down at the half to a very physical and taller team from Berkshire, Matt led the way to a Kent victory by scoring 20 second half points, thus earning a 48-36 victory. He wound up as the game’s high scorer with 26 points. This was the squad’s 4th straight victory after an opening game loss.”

“Matt gets most of his points on the inside, with a nice assortment of moves which he continues to perfect. He has led us in most of our games, along with the fine point guard play and scoring of Alex Caruso, terrific rebounding and improved scoring by Nate Coffin, and steady play by the other starters, Olivier Fontaine and Hill Davenport.”

“The team is hopeful of continued success with hard work in practice, and steady development of the other players on the team.”

Congratulations, Matt!!

Joni Kung '10

JONI KUNG ’10
KENT SWIMMING
1/24 - 1/30

Head swim coach Julie Zurolo has high praise for her candidate, Joni Kung.

“Joni had an amazing double dual meet versus Ms. Porters and Northfield-Mt. Hermon, scoring many valuable points for the team. She helped our medley and 400 freestyle relays place third and second, while placing second in her 2 individual events, the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. She dropped 4 seconds from her previous best IM time, and knocked 2 seconds off of her breaststroke best.”

“Joni anchored the 400 yard relay team in the meet’s last event. Entering the water a full ¼ lap behind the NMH team, she ran her opponent down, touched her out, and secured a second place finish for the relay! What an exciting finish to an exciting finish to a double dual meet!”

Congratulations, Joni!!!

Gary Ricks '10

GARY RICKS ‘10
KENT VARSITY BASKETBALL

1/17 - 1/23

Gary Ricks is this week’s male “Athlete of the Week”, being nominated by Head Coach Jason Coulombe.

“Gary’s leadership has clearly been one of the primary reasons for our current success, and the team’s development and strong character.”

Gary has averaged 19 points per game in his last 4 contests. It is no coincidence that Kent has won 3 of those 4 games. He has also averaged 7 assists in those games, along with a terrific rebounding ability for someone who is a guard (5 rebounds per game over these 4 games).

Kent’s Varsity basketball team is truly a family, and it is unusual for Coach to award a single player with this accolade. However, it is without a doubt that this year’s Varsity Basketball team will go only as far as Gary, our floor general, can lead us.

The team looks forward to the challenges ahead in the coming weeks.

Congratulations, Gary!!

“In this week’s meet against Westminster, he scored 156 points to take 1st place, and helped the Swimming and Diving team to a victory. Jamal has worked very hard to learn the finer points of diving, and while he works to refine his skills even more, this is an amazing accomplishment for a first-year diver.”

Congratulations, Jamal!!

RICH HARRIS ‘10
KENT VARSITY HOCKEY

1/3 - 1/9

The Kent Varsity Hockey squad’s coaching staff nominates 6th former Rich Harris as this week’s “Athlete”. Assistant Coach Garrison Smith writes,

“Rich Harris has had an excellent season for the Kent Lions. He is third on the team in goals, fourth in points, and has scored three game-winning goals this season.”

“In the past week, Rich scored the second goal against Westminster, tipping a shot from the point over the shoulder of the Westie goalie. Then against Loomis, he scored the game-winning goal, as he knocked in a cross ice pass for Kent’s first goal, and his second in the week.”

“Rich has some of the best hands on the team, and his ability to dangle the puck is legendary amongst his teammates. Rich certainly lives up to the adage that “good things come in small packages.”

Congratulations, Rich!!

Eleanor Shotton '12

“This was an outstanding feat for one of our swimmers, and we are extremely excited to see her future accomplishments in this sport.”

Congratulation, Eleanor!!!
