CHARLES CARON-MARQUIS ’09
BOYS VARSITY FOOTBALL

11/6 - 11/11

Charles helped Kent to a 36-12 victory over Erickson League rival Avon Old Farms, with stellar play on both sides of the ball. On defense, he recorded 8 unassisted tackles, with 2 additional assists and a fumble recovery.
On offense, he completed 6 of 11 passes for 110 yards, and rushed for 134 yards on 15 carries. Charles accounted for 2 of Kent’s touchdowns, and led the offense, as they controlled the ball for most of the game.
The win evened Kent’s League record at 1-1, with a key Erickson League tilt versus Salisbury coming on Friday night.

Congratulations, Charles!

Samantha McMorris

SAMANTHA McMORRIS ’11
GIRLS JV SOCCER

11/6 - 11/11

Coach Jakupciak writes, “Sam broke her thumb earlier in the season, and while missing only one game, she continues to play daily with a cast on. She has exhibited tremendous desire, coming to practice ready to go, and giving 100%.”
“In Saturday’s game against Miss Porter’s, she was often first to the ball, and
didn’t shy away when contact was imminent. She also had several gorgeous crosses,
giving her teammates the opportunity to score.”
“Sam is always willing to do anything that is asked of her, and always gives her
best. When on the sidelines, she is the strongest supporter of her teammates- encouraging
them with a very positive attitude, and dedicated focus. She is not only an amazing
athlete, but an amazing young woman!”

Congratulations, Samantha!

THE GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER TEAM
11/3-11/8

The Kent Girls Varsity Soccer team completed another stellar season this Fall, completing the year with another invitation to the Class A New England tournament, this time a #3 seed.
Coach Jesse Klingabiel states,
“Practicing all fall with great focus and enthusiasm, the team played each game with a flair and creativity born on the practice field. It was a pleasure to watch.”
“The final game of the season, in the quarterfinals of the New England tournament, was an impressive display of their attacking prowess, as they forced visiting Greenwich Academy into a defensive shell, out-shooting them by a 2-1 margin. Unfortunately, three quick counterattacks were all that was needed for the winning margin, a tough 3-2 overtime defeat.”
“The final score does not reflect the great defensive play of the team, and the thoughtful distribution and teamwork shown throughout the game, and the entire season.”

Congratulations, ladies!!

THE BOYS VARSITY SOCCER TEAM
11/3-11/8

Coach Tim Booth writes: “The Kent boys Varsity Soccer team had a season for the ages this fall. We played in our first Class A New England tournament since 1991, building on the foundation erected by last year’s team.”
“Our match on Wednesday did not produce the desired result, but the boys left their hearts on the field, playing one of it’s most dominant second halves of the season against the highest Eastern New England seed, Worcester Academy.”
“The squad played with guts and courage, and deserved great credit for doing what many thought they couldn’t. We would not have accomplished what we did without our senior leaders, Captains Richie Edmondson and James McKay. Fellow Seniors James Berry, Giulio Serena di Lapigio, Steve Trostle, and Matthijs van Caldenborgh were steady contributors.”
“The sense of competition, sportsmanship, commitment, sacrifice, fun, and courage instilled by this Senior class has further solidified the foundation of what is fast becoming one of the most respected programs in New England.”

“Congratulations on amazing campaign. It’s been a special ride.”

connor smith

CONNOR SMITH ’10
BOYS J.V. SOCCER

10/27-11/1

In his first year as goalkeeper, Conner Smith has made steady improvement throughout the season. This past Wednesday, after a defensive breakdown gave Trinity-Pawling a 1-0 lead, Conner stopped numerous shots over the final 60 minutes of the game, helping Kent secure a 4-1 victory.

On Saturday, Conner entered the Hotchkiss game trailing 1-0. The score would have been much worse, if not for superior goaltending by his fellow keeper, Kyle Strong.

Coach Benjamin stated that “Conner deflected, smothered, and otherwise nullified a barrage of tough Hotchkiss shots. Most memorable was his diving stop of a hard free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.”

“Thanks to Conner’s saves, solid all around team play, and a great breakaway goal from Senior Noory Hwang, Kent earned a 1-1 tie against it’s strongest opponent to date. Fine work, Mr. Smith!”

Congratulations, Conner!

tegan campia

TEGAN CAMPIA ’10
GIRLS VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY

10/27-11/1

Tegan was phenomenal in goal during this past week’s wins over Founder’s League rival Choate-Rosemary Hall, followed by a shutout win versus Westover School.

Choate was able to muster just a single tally in the solid Kent win. Tegan came up big several times, making numerous challenging saves, specifically at the end of the first half, as Kent weathered a Choate barrage. She did an excellent job directing the defense, and making sure that all Choate players were marked up in the circle.

Tegan responded to the challenge once again in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Westover. Coach Cortney Tetrault has high praise for her Junior Goalkeeper.

“Tegan has made tremendous progress this year, and has emerged as a leader for the defense. She is calm in the goal, and exudes the confidence needed to make clutch plays late in the game.”

Congratulations, Tegan!

erin daniels

ERIN DANIELS ’10
GIRLS J.V. FIELD HOCKEY

10/20 - 10/25

Erin has had an outstanding few weeks for the J.V. Field Hockey squad. As the team’s center back, she rarely has a chance to score goals. However, in Wednesday’s contest against K.O., she came very close, with a beautiful assist on the team’s first tally, a rocket into the circle, which was ultimately tipped in by Lyman Ambrose.

Erin also had a terrific game against Taft on Saturday. Although the team came out on the short end, her strong performance on defense kept the ball out of the circle for the majority of the game.

Coach Davis raves about her Center Back. “Erin is one of the hardest workers that we have on the team, and one of our most skilled. Her fast and consistent hits help to move the ball quickly downfield, out of our defensive end. Because of her skill and speed, she is rarely on the sidelines. She is a true competitor!”

Congratulations, Erin!

james berry

JAMES BERRY ‘09
BOYS VARSITY SOCCER

10/20 - 10/25

Goalkeeper James Berry has been stellar as the last wall of defense for the boys Varsity Soccer team this season. He has risen through the Kent soccer program’s ranks, playing on all 3 interscholastic levels. Coach Booth states that “James represents what Kent soccer is all about; guts, selflessness, hard work, sportsmanship, and the love of competition.”

“Through 13 matches, James’ “goals against average” is less than 1 per game, a stunning mark at any level of play. Bolstered by an excellent defensive line, he has also become one of the true leaders in his defensive third of the field.”

“ James’ metamorphosis as a soccer player is rare. As the team fights for a first tournament invitation in recent memory, James’ play will be a key to any success going forward. If history is any guide, he will step up to the challenge.”

Congratulations, James!

louisa drake

LOUISA DRAKE ’09
GIRLS VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY

10/13 - 10/18

Louisa had a terrific week for the Varsity Field Hockey squad. She assisted on two of the 3 goals in a recent win over the Pomfret School. Coach Cortney Tetrault sees tremendous improvement in Louisa’s game in a year’s time, attributing that growth in no small part to her continuing maturity, and attendance at Yale University’s summer Field Hockey camp.
Most recently, Louisa set up an important corner for what proved to be the decisive goal in the team’s 2-1 win over Ethel Walker. Coach Tetrault praises her co-captain’s performance thus far.
“Louisa has one of the prettiest drives on our team, and is consistent in her midfield play. She is vocal on the field, and does everything in her power to help build team character.”
“Louisa carries a positive energy that only a true leader possesses, and she has been phenomenal in her role as a Co-captain this season.”

Congratulations, Louisa!

jason barnes

JASON BARNES ’11

On Wednesday, October 15th, Jason had yet another stellar performance, running for 113 yards in the first half against Salisbury, with 2 touchdowns, sparking the Lions to a resounding 20-0 victory!
Coach Eric Houston proclaims that “Jason’s tough running has provided spark for our offensive squad to keep us on the field, eating up the clock while earning valuable first downs. He is a smart runner with an iron will, refusing to be tackled in one-on-one confrontations.”

Congratulations, Jason!

TYLER WILSON '10
BOYS VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY

9/29 - 10/4

Tyler Wilson has been a standout among the boys cross country runners during this young season. A three year Varsity veteran, Tyler’s work ethic continues to impress his coaches and peers. His positive attitude and motivation keep him at the head of the pack.
Coach Sokolnicki raves about Tyler’s eagerness to try the coaches’ suggestions and new things, always with a smile on his face. His dedication and hard work will bring great rewards, both now, and later in the season. Congratulations, Tyler!

LAUREN BRADY '10
GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER

9/29 - 10/4

Coach Jesse Klingabiel writes, “ Taking her soccer passion to new heights, Lauren Brady played 2 terrific games last week. She scored 2 terrific goals in our victory over Deerfield. On Wednesday, she helped the squad top Millbrook with 2 fine assists.”

“With the ante raised against Deerfield, a top Western New England Prep School squad, Lauren stepped up her game. Midway through the second half, Lauren sprinted onto Brittany Casey’s cross, rocketing a shot into the back of the net. The two paired up again 10 minutes later, with Casey dropping a pass for Lauren, who sent it home once again.”

DAVID HEAD '10
BOYS' 3RDS SOCCER

9/22 - 9/27

David has been a leader on the 3rds soccer team for 3 years, and this year is wearing the Captain's badge. His skills at Striker position improve daily. With his mighty left foot, David scored 2 goals in a win over Trinity-Pawling on Saturday.

One of his netters was a very pretty shot with his left, and the other was a pure hustle goal. Coach Shoop states that "We as coaches are very proud of David's ability to lead by example, and to put a few away in the back of the net."

"Congratulations, David, and keep up the good work!"

DOROTHY MCKAY '09
GIRL'S VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY

9/15 - 9/20

In the season opener last week, Dorothy McKay scored what proved to be the game winner as Kent defeated Gunnery, 2-1. McKay continued to be an offensive force, tallying a beautiful goal and 2 assists in a 5-1 victory over Miss Porter's. McKay's tally came off a nice fast-break pass from Amie Pritchard.

To quote Coach Tetrault, "Her Goal was so picture-perfect that it actually gave me goosebumps. As center forward, McKay now leads the Kent offense with total points and shots on goal. I am so proud of the hustle and level of determination she brings to each and every game."
