LIAM FISTOS '12 BOYS
CROSS-COUNTRY
11/8 - 11/13
Head coach Jeremy Sokolnicki nominates this week's male winner, Liam Fistos
"Liam had a great season this fall. In his second year with the team, he knew what he was going to need to do to be successful, including summer preparation, and dedication to the team. Liam is an intense individual, and it showed in his daily workouts, as exhibited quick feet and a powerful stride. When he sets his mind to it, Liam goes after it 100%
Fittingly, Liam had his best race this past weekend at the New England Championships, finishing second for Kent, just seconds behind our team leader. Liam is still working out some of the details in his form and running economy. With one season remaining in his Kent career, we are encouraged and excited with the possibilities!
Liam is a front-runner for the team, and a focused and intense competitor."
Congratulations, Liam!

AMIE PRITCHARD '11
VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY
11/8 - 11/13
Coach Cortney Tetrault writes, "Amy Pritchard was our squad's M.V.P., a true team member, who daily exhibited an abundance of talent, yet always willing to set up the forwards for scoring opportunities. She could be counted on to consistently arise to the occasion in crucial situations that make the difference between success and failure.
This was evidenced clearly in our final game versus Loomis, as she scored the opening goal in our 2-2 overtime tie. Playing a man down in the overtime period, Amie displayed remarkable tenacity up and down the pitch.
She is one of only 2 players who have been on the Varsity squad since her freshman year, and has been monumental in turning the program into one of the top 10 teams in New England, finishing #9 at season's end. The 2 years previous to Amie's arrival to the program, Kent had a total of 4 wins. Her team's record this season was 11-4-1!
Amie is hoping to play division 1 field hockey next year.
Congratulations, Amie!

NICOLE MARVIN '12
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
11/1 - 11/6
Coach Andrew Baird writes,
"It was an impressive week of running for Nicole Marvin, as she broke her own home-course record on Wednesday, then became the Founders League individual champion on Saturday!
On Wednesday, versus Canterbury and the Gunnery, she was the first girl to cross the finish line, smashing her own course record by 26 seconds.
On Saturday, Nicole ran with the lead pack for the first half of the race, keeping the pressure on her opponents, then pulled away from the field to win going away by a margin of 20 seconds.
It has been a season of great success for Nicole. Hopefully, there will be more to come, as she prepares for this weekend's New England Championship."
Congratulations, Nicole!

KEVIN PUTT '11 BOYS
VARSITY SOCCER
11/1 - 11/6
Head coach Tim Booth nominates this week's male winner, Senior Prefect Kevin Putt.
"In a season that has seen it all, the boys soccer team has benefitted tremendously from the subtle influence of Kevin Putt. Kevin has made a strong statement about what it means to work hard, and to sacrifice for the good of the team.
Always in fifth gear, his approach towards competition and team this fall has had a dramatic influence on our recent successes on the field, and to the approach of his teammates in training and competition. He is the quintessential team player.
It has been a true pleasure to see this special young man develop on the field and off. Kevin Putt represents Kent soccer in the best of ways. We are all very proud of him."
Congratulations, Kevin!

BAILEY BRIGGS ’13
GIRLS J.V. FIELD HOCKEY
10/25 - 10/30
Coach Liza Davis writes, “Bailey Briggs has been a terrific addition to the J.V. Field Hockey team. New to the sport, she has learned very quickly, and now is a force to be reckoned with at midfield. With a powerful drive, and great field sense, Bailey quickly earned a spot in the starting lineup, and rarely leaves the field during games.
This past week, she played particularly well, scoring the team’s only goal against Taft on Saturday, in what was a very hard-fought and exciting 1-1 tie.
Bailey gives 110% in every game and practice. She is a true team player, and Kent’s Field Hockey program is fortunate to have her.”
Congratulations, Bailey!

JASON BARNES ’11
BOYS VARSITY FOOTBALL
10/25 - 10/30
Athletic Director and head football coach Todd Marble nominates this week’s male winner.
“Jason Barnes has had a stellar season with Kent Football. He is the leading player from a defensive statistical standpoint with 38 unassisted tackles, 15 assisted tackles, 1 fumble caused, 1 fumble recovered, 1 interception, and 4 pass breakups.
He had another outstanding effort in this past Saturday’s 55-7 win over Taft, rushing for 57 yards on 5 carries, and scoring a touchdown on a 43 yard pass reception.
Jason has excelled on defense, offense, and special teams, and is a player teams must account for in their offensive game planning.”
Congratulations, Jason!

WILLIAM CHYNOWETH ‘14
KENT THIRDS SOCCER
10/18-10/23/10
Coach Dr. Ben Nadire nominates 3rd former William Chynoweth as his
choice for this week’s male “Athlete”.
“Will plays the Sweeper position with the 3rds soccer squad. He has a knack for pressuring opponents at the right time, denies space and time well, and marks his opponents when needed.
He is a very “clean” soccer player. He has been a season-long starter, and is the backbone of the team. Will’s understanding of the game improves with every practice and every game.
He has a very bright future in soccer!”
Congratulations, William!

JUSTIN SHUGRUE ‘13
KENT CROSS COUNTRY
10/11-10/16
Coach Jeremy Sokolnicki nominates Justin Shugrue as his choice for this week’s award.
“Justin has been leading the team in race performances all season. After a second place finish at the Canterbury Invitational, he has been Kent’s first place finisher for every other race.
Following a strong Freshman season, the coaches knew that Justin would be a standout performer, but had not anticipated such rapid growth so soon in his athletic career. He is joined in a leadership role by captain Ji Eon Kim, Nate Coffin, and Liam Fistos.
Justin is not afraid of hard work. He is a disciplined, very gritty runner, who is not afraid of extra work as well. While not a captain, he certainly leads through his behavior, and is a great role model.”
Congratulations, Justin!

EMMA SUTTERLIN ‘11
KENT J.V. SOCCER
10/11-10/16
Head Coach Anne Russell writes of the impressive efforts of this week’s winner, 6th Former Emma Sutterlin.
“Emma has surely been the most valuable player for the J.V. soccer team thus far. If we kept records of saves or shots on goal, Emma would certainly have compiled an impressive record. In our Deerfield loss, Emma had 20-30 saves. Her tenacity and skill in coming out one-on-one kept the score a respectable 5-0. The Deerfield coaches praised her athleticism and fearlessness in goal.
Emma played so well in games against K.O. and Miss Porter’s that both teams’ coaches went out onto the field after the final whistle to shake her hand, even before they had congratulated their own teams! We have not seen that type of respect for a player since Jayde Bennett!
In a year with a plethora of young players, it’s been nice having a solid leader, a fine co-captain, and a tenacious worker in the goal!”
Congratulations, Emma!

TOM MANGELS ‘11
KENT VARSITY SOCCER
10/4-10/9
Varsity head coach Tim Booth has nominated this week’s winner.
“In a season marred by adversity at every turn, Tommy Mangels has quietly left his imprint on each and every match for the boy’s varsity soccer squad. Each competition sees Tom make a handful of highlight reel saves that have essentially kept his team in important matches.
Always there with a smile, Tommy has also been a quintessential team player, sacrificing for his teammates at every turn. With a young defensive line, he has shown a growing leadership capacity, and continues to do the little things that make a goalkeeper great: distribution, commanding the box, playing with his feet, and organizing the defense.
Aside from his skills as a goalkeeper, Tom is a pleasure to coach. With caring, optimistic constitution, he is a walking representation of what it means to be a part of a team.”
Congratulations, Tom!

ARDEN REYNOLDS ‘11
KENT VARSITY SOCCER
10/4-10/9
Head Coach Jesse Klingebiel nominates his “difference maker”, 6th former Arden Reynolds.
“In the week’s first contest, Arden led the Kent attack with perhaps the most critical goal of the game, as she responded to a pair of Millbrook goals with a tally of her own only seconds before the end of the first half. She added another in the second half, and her play was essential in not allowing our opponents to gain positive traction against our defense.
Against Deerfield on Saturday, Arden was an attacking force, winning ball after ball from her central midfield position. Critically, she notched the game-winning goal late in the second half, with a blast from outside the box, as we came all the way back after spotting Deerfield an early lead.
Arden’s competitive drive and unending positive attitude are essential to all of our success this season.”
Congratulations, Arden!

NICOLE MARVIN ‘12
KENT CROSS COUNTRY
9/27-10/2
Update: Congratulations to Nicole Marvin for winning the girls division of the Founders League Cross Country Championships on Saturday! The team placed 6th overall.
Nicole Marvin has now added New England Champion to her Founders League title.
She is also Athlete of the Week for the second time this fall season.
Head Coach Andrew Baird writes of the impressive efforts of novice runner Nicole Marvin.
“As a newcomer to the sport, Nicole has dominated from the outset. During the past week, she was the overall winner in our dual meet with Choate, winning by a decisive margin.
Nicole closed out the week with an even more impressive showing at the Westminster Invitational. Competing against runners from six other schools, Nicole finished first overall. But this was more than just a solid victory. Pushing the pace early, and running alone for much of the second half of the race, Nicole finished in 20:37, breaking the meet record by over 20 seconds.
These strong early performances certainly bode well for the rest of Nicole’s season!”
Congratulations, Nicole!

SCOTT MITCHELL ‘11
KENT CROSS COUNTRY
9/27-10/2
Coach Jeremy Sokolnicki nominates veteran Scott Mitchell as his choice for this week’s award.
“As one of our co-captains, Scott has been a solid leader by example thus far this season. Though he has been fighting through nagging injuries, he is always enthusiastic about workouts, and eager to work with the team. He is very supportive of his teammates, and when the battle is over, he’s back in there encouraging everyone from the front of the pack to the last runner across the finish line.
Despite a tremendously busy schedule, Scott is able to focus on the task at hand, and always puts forth his best efforts. We are very pleased to have him leading the squad this season.”
Congratulations, Scott!

JASON LASSITER ‘11
KENT VARSITY FOOTBALL
9/20 - 9/25
Coach Todd Marble issues high praise for Sixth Former Jason Lassiter.
“Jay was the model of consistency in Kent’s season-opening 41-13 win over visiting Berkshire. Playing quarterback, he completed 6 of 9 passes for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns. His Quarterback Rating of 149.3 was likely a school record.”
“Jason also rushed for 43 yards on 9 carries, and punted 3 times, averaging 45 yards per punt. His steady leadership was a key reason for the team’s success. He and his teammates will face a stiff challenge this Saturday versus Trinity-Pawling School.”
Congratulations, Jason!

ERIN LIDL ‘11
KENT VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY
9/20 - 9/25
Head Coach Cortney Tetrault nominates Erin Lidl as our first female “Athlete of the Week”.
“Tri-Captain Erin led our squad to successive victories. In the opener against The Gunnery, Erin had an assist, and scored a beautiful goal off a corner, and versus Miss Porter’s, assisted on the game-winning goal by Ally Troy.”
“Erin’s stick skills and field vision have progressed each season on the Varsity. This past summer, she participated in “Futures”, whose mission is to regionally identify and develop possible “futures” Olympic level athletes.”
“Erin is a terrific Captain who leads by example, and is a terrific sport. She puts the team first, and boosts the competitive spirit of her teammates. I look forward to more outstanding field hockey from this feisty forward.”
Congratulations, Erin!
