The Girls Basketball season was a resounding success, especially considering the team’s youth and inexperience. The girls developed into a cohesive group, able to grasp various offennse and defensive concepts while at the same time improving their overall skill level as the season progressed. Regardless of whom the team played, the girls exhibited a high level of sportsmanship exemplifying the best of Kent athletics. Under first year head coach Wayne Walton, then team progressed much further than anticipated, challenging for the Founders League championship and earning a spot in the New England tournament at season-end.
With an overall record of 16-4, the squad was undefeated at home. A turning point for the team was a come from behind (erasing a 14-point deficit) win by 4 points over a talented Taft team. The girls also reached the finals of the Pomfret Christmas Tournament losing only to Cushing in the championship game by a small margin.
Captains Leandra Heller and Meghan Kelly were instrumental in encouraging and motivating the under formers on the team. Sophomore sensation Sasha Dosenko was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, earning a spot on the New England All-Star team while freshman standout Jade Bennett and Dosenko earned All Founders League recognition. Shannon Dickson, the team’s most improved player, also was instrumental to the team’s success. With three starters retuning, we look forward to continued success next year.
