Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse began the year with only six returning letter winners. The theme for the season was improvement as players were challenged to raise their level of play as individuals and as a team. The team started the season in Orlando, Florida with a week of spring training. It became obvious during that week that the team stocked a few players that could compete with anyone in the country and if we were going to be competitive in the very challenging Division 1 Western New England Secondary School Lacrosse League other players had to raise their level of play.
Team leaders from the start were senior midfielder and co-captain Marc Bucks, who will play next year at the Naval Academy. Post graduate Colin Benko – the team’s leading scorer - played both midfield and attack and will join Bucks next year at the Naval Academy. Senior long stick midfielder Chris Taft, who will play soccer at Richmond, and senior goalie Zach Furshman, who will play at Gettysburg next year rounded out the top echelon pf players. Furchman is probably the best clearing goalie in the country, scoring three goals and two assists, earning first team All-League recognition in the process.
The team kicked off the season with two wins and confidence was high. After tough losses, the Lions competed well the remainder of the year. Senior defenseman Andres Soriano became a leader of the close defense along with junior JP Binette and Sophomore Andrew Davis as the team gave up less than 10 goals per game for the final 10 games of the year.
On offense, senior SJ Brussard became a viable option as a left-handed attack. Junior, captain elect, Justin Williams became a scoring threat with a scorching outside shot. Senior Jeff Hamill made a switch from attack to his more natural midfield position and really shined. Captain elect Harry Seherr-Thoss made the most improvement in the offensive zone and became a dominant player at the midfield area.
The final four games of the year were the best of the season. After falling behind 6-1 to Deerfield, who was ranked in the top 5 in the country, the Lions battled back and closed the score to 7-4 before ending with a hard fought 9-5 loss. Following a tough 12-11 overtime loss to Westminster, Kent dominated their last two games winning 16-10 and 10-4.
