Despite its losing records, Girls Varsity Hockey fielded one of its most competitive teams in recent years. Players played with heart and determination against all opponents, down to the very last game. Defensively, the squad could not have performed better, yet the Lions found themselves a bit short offensively in many tight contests throughout the ‘04’-05 campaign.
The team’s senior leaders led the way with their aggressive, spirited play. Co-captain Candace Turnbull established herself as one of the best keepers in western New England, posting a .914 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average. Co-captain Jordan Pyers unhesitatingly returned to defense this year, and drew rave reviews from all who watched her. Candace and Jordan’s skills earned both All-Founders League honors. Justine McLaughlin was once again a mainstay on the blue line for the Lions. Jacqueline Regan contributed several timely goals from her left wing position. Newcomer Alex Blackwell was a selfless team player, sparking the offense as a forward and volunteering to play defense for two weeks when injuries caught up with the team. Junior Christine Fuchs led the team in scoring, being named co-captain for next year along with veteran Erin Evans. Christine and Erin will seek to maintain the great competitive spirit displayed by this year’s team.
