About the
Coach: Tom Kates
"There's no
tougher sport than golf. You're all alone and no one can
help you. In hockey, football, soccer, or lacrosse, you always
got someone to bail you out, but you hit one bad shot in
golf and that could be it." (Bobby Orr)
Kent School offers a Varsity and Junior
Varsity coed golf program focusing on developing the skills
of the individual player as well as providing excellent team/match
competition. During the spring season dual, tri and quad-matches
are played weekly on such challenging, historic courses as
Taconic Golf Course at Williams College and the Golf Course
at Yale University. Kent School's home course is the beautiful
Silo Ridge Country Club course in Amenia, NY. This 18 hole,
par 72, 6,763-yard course has a USGA rating 71.8/slope 135.
In his 4 th season as Varsity Golf Head
Coach, Tom Kates has made Kent's golf program competitive
in the 9-school Founders' League. In 2002 Kent's overall
record was 19-7, led by Captain Brendon Ray, '02, who matriculated
at Rollins College in Florida, the 2002 NCAA Division II
Interscholastic golf champion. In 2004 Kent's team has been
lead by senior Captain Alden Cook, '04 and his brother Ben
Cook, '06 of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Both Cook brothers
have earned individual match medallist honors this spring
and Ben's score of 82 posted at the Taconic GC in late April
was the overall match medallist of the 24 Kent, Deerfield,
Hotchkiss, and Berkshire golfers.
