Message from the Coach:
As the Boys Cross Country coach at Kent, my goals are several. I want to continue to build the strength of the program. We have had some great runners in our recent past, from Will Daly to Marc Bucks, to Renato Campos and John Goodwin. These young men were known throughout the league for their natural talent and for what they accomplished. They were respected by other coaches, and they have left a legacy that others are taking hold of now.
There are so many talented student-athletes at Kent, and among our community are some truly great runners. Some of them have not made it to the team yet. Others run with us every day. We strive to get as many people interested in running as we can. Running is a challenge. While it is a team sport, there is something so singular about running a race that for many athletes it just does not click. For those who enjoy pushing themselves, setting goals and working hard to reach them, getting out into nature and moving fast, cross country is the perfect endeavor. Running is a lot of fun, and we want to share that with people.
Our team enjoys a great variety of resources at our disposal. We have some absolutely amazing trails right near campus, with parks, streams, and mountains all around. Our course is one of the most challenging in New England, and one of the most beautiful and natural. We enjoy and thrive on a strong relationship with Kent’s crew program. Our workouts are varied and interesting. Hills, distance, speed, technique drills, form work, core strengthening. We try to cover everything. With a strong but well-spaced racing schedule, the boys can train properly, and have ample time to prepare for each race without the risk of over-racing. We look forward to continued success and enjoyment this season!
I started running in my junior year at Choate. For me, running was a challenge, an opportunity to excel, and a lot of fun. It was something that had never crossed my mind as a talent I possessed. I continued running competitively at Hamilton College, and led the team as captain in my junior and senior years. It was a fantastic experience for me, and added great balance to my life. The thrill of the race, the challenge of the workout, the good friends and the great times are what running is all about!
