Micro-Fiction Writing Contest Winners

This week we feature three Kent writers, winners of the recent micro-fiction contest

The Wedding
Betty Miao Cui ’11

I don’t fit in white, she thought as she looked in the gold mirror. She looked around at those people, busy and happy. She couldn’t help frowning. There he came, put his hand on her belly.

“Thank you, and I am sorry,” she said

“I love you. And love is dear, I know,” he said.

Ladies' Night
Vicky Ahn ’09

Her lips were pouting as if she were captive of inner turmoil. She felt his gaze and kept her actions deliberate. She imagined the grooves of his hands. He was tall, and he seemed the quiet type.  Feigning oblivion, she turned and stared into his dark eyes.

She needed another drink. She’d been seducing a cardboard cutout.

Nic Brickley ’09
He grabbed his stomach; Lexi told him there wasn’t any milk in the food.  She knew he was allergic.  He solemnly kicked a rock.  Maybe he should tell her about Emily before she heard something.   Suddenly, tears came, and he fell to his knees.  With his insides burning, he figured that Lexi already knew.

About the Kent Micro-Fiction Contest
English teacher Barbara Stout administers the contests for the English Department, which she notes vary between poetry and prose contests; between funny and serious, twice each indicator. Past contests have included short memoirs, New Yorker Cartoon captions, song lyrics and online magnetic poetry kit love poems for Valentine’s Day.

This time, students were to submit a micro-fiction story. A micro-fiction is a short story that challenges students to write a piece containing all the elements of a traditional short story-- a setting, one or more characters, conflict, and resolution-- but in 55 words or less.  Because micro fictions are brief, students must make each word count.
