Zach Howard: One of Kent’s Best

by Ellie Place, courtesy of Kent News

Zach Howard ’10’s musical success over the past sixteen years is no stroke of luck. He was a product of musical parents, and grew up in a musically oriented household. Growing up, his father listened to any kind of music imaginable, and Zach has learned to do the same. Listening to everything from Sonny Rollins to Eric Clapton has influenced Zach’s style of music. With his father as his greatest inspiration, music has always been one of his main priorities in life because he has always been surrounded by it.

Zach grew up in East Lyme, Connecticut where he started his music career early after receiving an electric keyboard at age seven. In fourth grade, when asked to pick an instrument to play, he chose the alto saxophone and he continued playing through grade school. Here at Kent, Zach plays the saxophone in the Jazz band, the Concert Band, the Dixieland band and takes private lessons. He is also a member of the Kent Tri-M Honor Society. Zach’s talent on the saxophone shines through his improvisation and solos. He performs multiple solos in every Jazz Band concert and the crowd is always impressed with his ability to play something interesting and catchy on the spot.  Zach also plays impressive improvisation with friends just for fun.

Although he is a talented saxophone player, Zach is not limited to the sax.  His passion for music inspired him to pick up the guitar after coming to Kent School. When asked why he started playing the guitar he responded, “It’s just a way to make music, and I’ll make it anyway I can.”  Since arriving at Kent his freshman year he has improved his piano skills and has recently learned how to play the ukulele. But Zach is not only focused on music, for he is also a member of the Kent boys’ varsity soccer team and the boys’ lacrosse team. A man of all trades, Zach Howard is an irreplaceable member of the Kent School community.
