When you come to Kent, you'll see examples of student art everywhere. Maybe you'll see the dining hall hung with large sculptural chandeliers or discover that the trees have sprouted tiny ice cubes, each containing a single rose petal. Maybe you’ll notice the student mural that riffs on a famous Gustav Klimt or become engrossed in the charcoal sketches in the hall outside your first period classroom. Or you'll realize the literary magazine is chock-full of sketches and photography.
It all makes you realize how varied the visual art courses are at Kent. And because the faculty are all professional artists themselves, they won't just show you technique; they'll teach you passion. They may also challenge you to create art directly inspired by another academic discipline, whether it is sculpture to theology or painting to history or drawing to biology.
Art courses make use of the latest technology too. Photography students use high-tech work stations to digitally manipulate photos and it seems there's always new art-related software program you can download to your own laptop. To support these efforts the Adobe Creative Suite (CS) is available to everyone on campus.
Of course art, like everything else at Kent, will challenge you in new ways. For example, our AP Art History course is tough and, probably because of that, rare at the high school level. But it's also incredibly interesting. It really complements Kent's wide course offerings and other art events.
All of this is sure to bring out your artistic potential. And who knows, maybe you'll really shine and be one of the 12 students chosen to compete in the Scholastic Art Awards competition. One thing's for sure, Art at Kent will help you grow personally and intellectually and you'll make cool things to look at.
