Spending Money & Student Debit Card Account
All student purchases while at the School are made with a Kent School Debit Card. Parents are required to deposit money into the student's debit account in advance so that their children may draw upon that account to cover both their required and descretionary purchases. If the student's account does not have sufficient funds to cover a transaction, the system will not allow the purchase until additional funds are deposited into the account. Parents may deposit money to their child's debit account at any time simply by sending a check to the school. Parents also may put caps on weekly discretionary spending by their children.
The debit card typically will be used for the following items:
- purchase of food at the Snack Bar
- purchases of discretionary transportation, such as a trip to a movie or the mall, or end-of-term transportation to airports
- purchases of books and other required academic items
- purchases of discretionary items
- spending money drawn from the student bank for use off campus
Draws will be made on the student debit card to pay for lab fees, studio fees, medical charges such as prescriptions or X-rays, PSAT and SAT testing, and music lessons. |
|
Draws will also be made on the student debit card account to pay for replacement of lost items, such as room keys, debit cards or athletic equipment. Draws will also be made for library fines or damage to school property.
Spending varies from student to student, so we cannot give hard and fast estimates for planning your budgets. We have found that on a normal basis students need about $1800 over the course of a year to cover textbook purchases and discretionary spending. Students who spend more at the school store and take more trips to malls and movie theaters need an amount in excess of $1800. As a starting point, we suggest a weekly allowance of $25-30 and approximately $700 for textbooks. Used books are sold at minimal cost and financial aid recipients are given priority in used book distribution, but availability is limited and in no way guaranteed.
Payment Plans
Payment for tuition may be made directly to the School or through Key Education Resources Payment Plans. Under the school direct payment plans parents have three choices: paying a full year's tuition in one installment due August 1; paying a full year's tuition in two installments due August 1 and December 1; or prepaying full tuition at the entry year rate for the entire time their child will attend Kent.
Under the Key Education Resources Payment Plan parents have the option of a ten-month interest-free payment plan with payment beginning May 1.

Financial Aid at Kent Kent School is committed to attracting a diverse and talented student body. The mission of our financial aid program is to make it possible for deserving students whose families do not have the financial resources to fully meet the cost of a Kent education to attend. We believe the primary responsibility for financing a child’s education rests with the family and as such we look to them first to finance educational expenses to the extent their resources will allow. To assist families in managing expenses we offer options such as monthly payment plans and loans, but often, payment plans and loans alone will not be sufficient to enable their child to attend Kent. In these cases families can apply for additional need-based assistance, keeping in mind that each year more families qualify for assistance than we are able to fund. Frequently Asked Questions 1. How is eligibility for aid determined? In common with most independent schools, in assessing each individual family's financial need, Kent's Financial Aid Committee begins with the standardized calculation derived by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), based on information provided by the family on the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) or in the case of international students, the Kent School International Student Financial Aid Application. This system considers gross taxable income, assets, liabilities, family size and number of students enrolled in tuition-charging schools. After an allowance for basic necessities and taxes, the remaining funds are considered discretionary income, potentially available for education. In accordance with school policy, Kent requires documentation in addition to the PFS/International FA Application (Kent Questionnaire, tax returns, Business/Farm Statement for those who are self-employed) to be submitted directly to the school’s Financial Aid Office. As a result, in many cases, Kent's calculated parent contribution may differ from the SSS calculation. For example, Kent will disallow depreciation and most losses on second homes and investment properties and hobby businesses. Kent will also consider the potential for income to be earned by an able, non-working parent who does not have small children at home. In cases of divorce or separation, both natural parents are required to submit all required paperwork. Custodial parents are expected to forward the required forms to the non-custodial parent for completion. If either parent declines to submit the required information, no further consideration for aid will be given. If it is impossible for either parent to complete an application, please contact the Financial Aid Office for further instructions. If either parent has remarried, the application should include the step-parent’s financial information. Kent will consider the finances of a step-parent, bearing in mind the step-parent's obligation to his or her own natural children. Local families will be considered for aid to help meet expenses for their child enrolled as a day student only. If local families decide that their child will apply to be a boarding student, they will not be considered for financial aid. Additionally, if a family has children in other tuition-charging schools, they are expected to apply to those institutions for aid as well. Kent reserves the right to verify enrollment/cost/aid for the sibling(s) enrolled at other institutions. Finally, participation in the equestrian program at Kent carries with it a significant extra expense ($3000/term currently). In determining eligibility for aid, we do not include this extra cost in our financial aid expense budget and therefore do not assign financial aid funds to cover it. 2. When will we be notified if we are being offered financial aid? On March 10, which is the Admissions notification date for all schools. 3. What will happen in future years; What if my finances change? If there is continuing need, families are required to apply for aid each year their child is enrolled at Kent. Awards may be adjusted if the family’s financial circumstances change. 4. If we do not apply/qualify for aid this year, can we apply again next year? Families whose children begin their career at Kent without financial aid will not be given consideration in subsequent years, barring unforeseen circumstances. 5. How do we apply for financial aid?

Estimating Real Costs For the 2007-2008 academic year, Kent tuition for boarding students is $39,900. For day students, tuition is $31,300. However, these figures represent only a portion of the actual expenses related to sending a child to an independent school. In determining each family’s individual financial need, Kent’s Financial Aid Committee considers the total cost of a Kent Education (including expenses such as books/supplies/personal expenses, fees, computer, etc.) to the extent possible, given individual variances in cost. A more detailed individual estimate of these additional costs will be presented to families whose children are offered admission and financial aid.
