Technology at KENT

We're committed to providing our teachers with the best resources with which to educate our students and to giving our students the tools to take full advantage of all we offer to explore and develop their intellectual life. As a college preparatory school, we also must help students develop the digital skills they will need in college, in advanced studies, and in life.

When you're on campus, you'll see that technology is used widely throughout the academic departments to enhance learning. Many teachers use a projector in the classroom in conjunction with a tablet PC as a digital, "smart" whiteboard. Many of them also add multimedia capability, too. Students taking science courses use electronic instruments to gather data, which they then analyze with specialized software. The new, state of the art Sanako language lab enables modern language teachers to share media with their class and record student responses and conversation. In the music department, computer carts equipped with microphones and SmartMusic software help instrumental students practice more effectively.

In addition, Kent provides the technological tools to support a wide range of creative endeavors, from the digital arts to pre-engineering. As a student you may install the Adobe Creative Suite on your computer (at no cost) and work with programs such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and InDesign. Digital video cameras are available to be checked out from the library. There also is a digital imaging lab with iMacs, PCs, and specialized printers for projects in photography, graphic design, and filmmaking. In the pre-engineering program, you'll take advantage of our partnership with the pre-eminent engineering software company PTC. You'll use best in breed ProEngineer and Mathcad software to create 3D schematic drawings and then use the school's 3D printer to render those designs as physical objects.

Supporting the ubiquitous role that technology plays at Kent is our secure, high-speed wireless (wifi) network covering all academic and many public areas of campus, including common rooms, the Student Center, and outdoors. And we're expanding the coverage to include new spaces, like your dorm room. Our network is the portal to all aspects of your digital life at Kent: the Moodle course management system, email, the Internet, Kentranet (the school intranet), student printers, and your personal network drive where you can store your academic work in a safe, backed-up location.
