Technology FAQ

Should I bring a laptop or a desktop?

You are required to bring a laptop. You're welcome to bring a desktop or other device as well and we'll do our best to help you with it. Please note that there are dorm rules about some kinds of devices, like gaming systems and televisions, which you'll need to pay attention to.

What software do I need?

Other than the right version of Windows or Mac OS, we'll provide most of what you need: You'll be able to install Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, ProEngineer, and others for free once you're on campus. Other course-specific software will either be provided for you or, in some cases, be something you'll need to purchase, like a textbook.

What if my computer breaks?

We'll do our best to help you! Click here for details.

How can I print? Do I need to bring a printer?

You can print from anywhere on campus and collect your documents at the Student Print/Copy Center. If you want to have a printer in your room, too, that's fine. Just remember, you'll want to use the space in your room wisely.

Will I have wireless in my dorm room?

Depending on where your room is, yes. Over the course of this year, we'll be bringing secure, high-speed wifi to all dorm rooms.

Can I connect my smartphone to Kent's network?

Most smartphones work well on our network.

What wireless carriers provide coverage in the Town of Kent?

AT&T and Verizon both work well here in Kent.

Do students bring their computers to classes?

Yes, and no. Different teachers will expect you to use your computer in different ways. If they ask you to bring it, you need to bring a working machine with the proper software and capabilities. Of course, if you like to take notes on your device, you're welcome to use it whether the teacher requires it or not.

Is there anything I should not bring?

Please don’t bring a wireless router. It’s unnecessary because you’ll already have wireless in your room. And, of course, please consult the Room Furnishings section of the Student Parent Information Bulletin for other items that should be left at home.
