Technology

At Kent, technology is part of the fabric of education. We use it in many ways in many places every day. It is transparent and real.

We are a pioneer in the Anytime Anywhere Learning (AAL) program (1995) and were one of the first 30 schools to commit to this integration of laptops in education. Our program includes classroom use of technology and campus-wide use of tablet PCs in a comprehensively networked, fully switched environment with high speed access to the both the commercial Internet and the academic Internet2. We are much more like a small college than a high school which makes sense -- that's where we prepare our students to succeed.

Kent provides a comprehensive wireless network as well as nearly 2,000 data drops campus-wide giving students access to the Internet and School Network from every classroom and dorm room, as well as from the library and administrative offices. Student dorm rooms have both data and voice capability for each student, providing for phone, Internet, and intranet communication and access. Our unified messaging system stores student voicemail in their email boxes and since Kent email is a required form of communication, it is all but certain students get their parents' messages.
We recognize that many students will bring and use cell phones and their appropriate use is expected. Even with a cell phone, students must set up their dorm phone to insure that messages from faculty, staff and other students get to them in a timely fashion.

The basics of the technology program:
Kent includes the necessary academic computing tool in the enrollment contract in order to guarantee a computer up to the job, the right software pre-configured to work, proper protection from viruses and access to our best resources for quick repair and minimum downtime. We entirely support these computers. There is nothing else you need to do. You may upgrade the computer through the Technology Department. Be sure to contact Technology if you are interested or have any questions.

If you have a specific technical interest: digital photography or video, gaming, writing software, etc, you are welcome to bring additional equipment as long as you obtain permission from Technology and assistance in setting it up properly for the school’s systems. Please do not attach devices to the school’s network and systems without this permission.

Be sure to contact Technology if you have any questions or are considering bringing other computers to Kent. While we will do our best to help you with additional equipment, the academic computing equipment is our first priority.

School Policy: Publishing Student Information on the Web Site

We will only publish information about our students if we have a signed release form giving us permission to do so. The release form has two options -- YES, I give permission and NO, I do not give permission. The form also asks for information about local newspapers. If you fill in the information, student information such as honor roll and athlete of the week will be sent to the papers listed. Therefore, if you have not filled out a form and faxed it back to the Technology Department, please download the form from the parents website and return it as soon as possible.

Thank you!
