OUR 100TH YEAR NOW UNDER WAY
Excerpt from the Kent Quarterly
Dear alumni, parents and friends of Kent,
Ten minutes before every service in St. Joseph’s Chapel, the Sacristan, or an acolyte appointed for the task, rings the chapel bell to call the community to worship. The bell is rung according to the following pattern: three-three-three-eighteen. Three sets of three rings each, signifying a three-fold Kyrie Eleison, followed by eighteen rings for the first eighteen students at Kent.
In the 1906 photo above (hover over or click on the 1906 point on the timeline), some of the first eighteen students are pictured with Founder, Fr. Frederick H. Sill, OHC, and one of the first teachers, standing in front of the original Schoolhouse at a reception held for townspeople on the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels 1906.
In our 100th year now under way, we at Kent and the entire community of alumni/ae, parents and friends are reflecting on our origins and subsequent contribution to society, preparing for a year of observance and celebration of Kent’s Centennial beginning on Prize Day 2006 and continuing through Reunion Weekend 2007. We look forward to sharing in the months ahead, details of the plans and to inviting your ideas and participation for a proper and meaningful tribute to Kent’s first century.
